CHESTNUT HILL, Mass.- Julianna Verni struck out a career-high 13 and Madison Knight hit a three-run, seventh-inning home run to lead Syracuse (13-16, 2-9) by Boston College (11-28, 2-11), 4-1, in the first of a three-game series.
HOW IT HAPPENEDÂ
At the top of the first inning, Jadyn Burney was hit by a pitch to land on first base. A wild pitch thrown during Madelyn Lopez's plate appearance gave Burney the go-ahead to steal second base. On the next pitch, Burney went on to steal third base. After a fielding error during Madison Knight's at-bat, Burney was able to make it home to put a run on the board for the Orange. Vanessa Flores drew a walk while Knight stood on second base. Both runners advanced on a passed ball with Erika Zamora at the plate. Julianna Verni struck out three batters at the bottom of the inning to close out the defensive half of the inning for Syracuse.Â
Gabby Lantier placed a perfect bunt to reach first base in the top of the second inning. Lopez singled to left field, but the Orange were unable to bring both runners in to score.Â
At the top of the third, Vanessa Flores sent the ball deep down the left field line to reach second base. Peyton Schemmer entered as pinch runner, stealing third base during Zamora's at-bat. Lauren Fox, next in the lineup, was walked. A diving catch by the Eagles right fielder ended the inning for Syracuse. Â
At the bottom of the fifth inning, Boston College evened the score, bringing in a runner after a wild pitch. Verni recorded the final out of the inning, catching the Eagles' Abby Ptak stealing home. Â
Gabby Lantier kicked off the top of the seventh inning with a single to shallow left-center. Burney drew a walk as Lopez hit a sacrifice bunt to put runners on second and third base. Knight stepped up to the plate, sending the ball flying over the left field fence to add three runs to the board for 'Cuse and secure the 4-1 victory. Â
