SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Orange softball team (16-19, 3-12) fell to Notre Dame (19-26, 8-12) 9-5 in game two of the weekend. Kiami Tulua hit her fourth home run of the season, and Kendall Gaunt collected her fifth double of the season.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Syracuse defense started strong, as Rose Cano fielded a hard-hit grounder at third and threw to Grace Weaver at home plate for a tag out. Notre Dame would ultimately score the first run of the game on a Syracuse throwing error later in the inning.Â
The Fighting Irish would continue their lead into the second inning, scoring four more times on a short pop fly to center, a gap shot to the wall, a line drive to left field and a Syracuse fielding error. Â
The Orange would get on the board at the bottom of the fourth inning with a solo home run by Tulua.Â
SU would prevent the Irish from scoring again until the top of the fifth inning, on a line drive to left field. Erika Zamora ended Notre Dame's rally by recovering a bobbled ball and throwing to Taylor Davison at the plate for another tagged out.Â
Syracuse was able to get bases loaded in the sixth inning, with Harmony Jackson earning a walk, Madelyn Lopez singling to right field and Vanessa Flores earning a base after being hit by a pitch. Kaylee Eubanks scored after a failed pickoff attempt at first base, right before Gaunt sent the ball into the left center gap, batting in Lopez and Sophia Taliaferro.Â
Notre Dame would add two more runs to the board after a two-run homer by Ava Zachary. The Irish scored once more in the seventh inning with a home run.Â
Kayla Sigala collected her first double of the season on a line drive to center field to start the bottom of the seventh for the Orange. Peyton Schemmer, who was pinch running for Sigala, advanced to third base on a single by Lopez before scoring on a fly out by Flores. 'Cuse would not be able to capitalize on the momentum and fell to the Irish 9-5. Â
