SYRACUSE, NY – The Orange softball team (18-24, 4-16) kicked off its series with No. 13 Virginia Tech (42-9, 15-6) on Friday at Skytop Stadium, falling 12-1 in 5 innings. Madison Knight hit her 15th home run of the spring and moved into third on Syracuse's single-season list.
HOW IT HAPPENED
In the first inning Syracuse loaded the bases on singles from Knight and Kendall Gaunt, and a walk from Kaimi Tulua. Leading off the bottom of the third inning, Knight hit her 15th home run of the season to put Syracuse on the board.
In the field, Kiara Bellido threw out the Hokies' Gaby Mizelle to catch her stealing in the second inning. Lauren Fox added a diving stop to help limit the damage. In the top of the fifth, Vanessa Flores had a strong throw from right field to catch Virginia Tech's Jordan Lynch trying to stretch a single.
Virginia Tech recorded runs in each inning as Rachel Castine, Jordan Lynch, and Michelle Chatfield each drove in three runs. Virginia Tech ultimately secured a 12-1 win in the series opener.
GOOD KNIGHT
Knight's third-inning round-tripper moved her into third on the Syracuse single-season ledger. The record is shared by Jasmine Watson (2014) and Hallie Gibbs (2011), who each slugged 16 in one campaign.
Knight also moved into a sixth-place tie on the SU career home run list with her 29th. She equaled Julie Wambold's (2012-15) total. Watson (2011-14) owns fifth place. The school record is 47, by Connie Ozanne (2013-16).
OF NOTE
- Following Friday's result, Syracuse has a 16-14 advantage in the all-time series with Virginia Tech.
- Knight's previous best single-season home run total was six, in 2024.
- Catcher Kiara Bellido recorded the first caught stealing of her collegiate career.
- Sydney Jackson pitched 3.2 innings, her longest outing of the season.
