Orange Fall to No. 10 Florida State in ACC Opener

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.- The Orange softball team (11-8, 0-1) fell to No. 10 Florida State (23-4, 1-0) 12-1 in five innings. Gabby Lantier scored the sole run for the Orange in the top of the third inning, but 'Cuse was unable to overcome the Seminoles' seven-run fourth inning.Â
HOW IT HAPPENEDÂ
At the top of the first inning, leadoff hitter Jadyn Burney drew a walk and would go on to steal second base during Harmony Jackson's at-bat. On defense, Lauren Fox had a diving catch at second base, her first putout of the day, to help get the Orange out of Florida State's three-run inning.Â
In the bottom of the second inning, Lantier reached for the ball in the warning track to end the frame with two Seminoles left on base.Â
Lantier drew a walk in the top of the third to reach first base. Burney's sacrifice bunt advanced Lantier to second base. Jackson stepped up to the plate, sending the ball down the right field line. Lantier rounded third base and stepped across home plate to put 'Cuse on the board. In the bottom of the inning, Florida State added two more runs to the score to extend the lead to 5-1 after three innings.Â
The Seminoles would go on to score seven runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, including a grand slam home run. Syracuse was unable to answer at the top of the next frame, ultimately falling to No. 10 Florida State 12-1 in five innings.Â
OF NOTE
- Jadyn Burney stole her 13th base of the season, the most on the team.
- Peyton Schemmer stole her first base of the 2026 campaign. The only previous stolen base in her career was against Florida State in 2024.
- Vanessa Flores led the team in putouts, collecting four of SU's 12.
- The Orange are now 4-31 against the Seminoles.

Syracuse will face No. 10 Florida State for the second game of the series tomorrow, Saturday, March 14. The first pitch is set for 1 p.m. at the Seminole Softball Stadium and will be televised on ACC Network Extra.Â
