Orange Split Doubleheader with UAlbany

BINGHAMTON, N.Y.- The Orange women's softball team (11-7) split a doubleheader with UAlbany (4-7) on Sunday. Syracuse fell in the first game, 2-1 in nine innings, but claimed a 4-2 victory in the second game.Â
GAME 1Â
Leadoff hitter Jadyn Burney started at the top of the first inning with a triple to right field. In the bottom of the second inning, Lauren Fox hit her first career triple. She would go on to steal home plate after Rose Cano's dropped third strike to put 'Cuse on the board.Â
UAlbany would score a run in the top of the fourth inning. Both teams were tied at one run each, forcing the first game of the doubleheader into extra innings. In the top of the ninth inning, the Great Danes brought home a runner on second base with a double. The Orange were unable to answer in the bottom of the inning, ultimately falling to UAlbany 2-1.Â
GAME 2Â
UAlbany struck first in the second game of the doubleheader, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Â
In the top of the third inning, Mackenzie Knight bunted to reach first base. Gabby Lantier stepped up to bat, reaching on a fielder's choice, as Knight was called out at second base. Lantier went on to steal second base, and Burney drew a walk to reach first. Madison Knight drove in three runs after hitting her sixth home run of the season over the left field fence. The Orange took a 3-2 lead over the Great Danes. Â
Mackenzie Knight drew a walk in the top of the fourth inning to get to first base. She stole second base during Lantier's at-bat and would advance to third base after Lantier hit a single. Madelyn Lopez flied out to center field, giving Knight the go ahead to tag up and score. The Orange won the second game, 4-2 to split the day.Â
OF NOTEÂ
- Lauren Fox recorded her first career triple in the bottom of the second inning of the first game.Â
- 'Cuse hit a triple in back-to-back innings (Burney in the first, Fox in the second)Â in the first game.Â
- Julianna Verni pitched 5.0 innings in the first game, striking out seven batters.Â
- Madison Knight recorded her sixth home run of the season in the top of the third inning in the second game.Â
UP NEXTÂ
The Orange will begin their ACC slate in Tallahassee, Florida Friday, March 13 through Sunday, March 15. Syracuse will face Florida State for a three-game series at the Seminole Softball Complex.Â
