
'Cuse Splits in Day 2 of Liberty Softball Classic

LYNCHBURG, Va.- The SU softball team (7-5) split the second day of the Liberty Softball Classic, defeating Toledo (1-11) 4-3, but falling 7-0 to Liberty (5-9).Â
GAMEÂ 1 VS. TOLEDOÂ
Both teams were scoreless, until Toledo brought a runner home in the bottom of the fourth. Syracuse answered, as Kendall Gaunt doubled to center field at the top of the fifth. Erika Zamora drew a walk at her at-bat, and Sophia Taliaferro stepped in to pinch run. The runners advanced to second and third base after Jadyn Burney grounded out. Harmony Jackson was walked to fill the bases before Taylor Davison singled to left field to bring Gaunt and Taliaferro home.Â
Toledo added a run at the bottom of the sixth inning to tie up the score heading into the final frame. Jackson singled up the middle to earn a spot on first base. Madison Knight stepped up to the plate, sending the ball over the fence for her fourth home run of the season. 'Cuse allowed one run at the bottom of the seventh inning, but it wasn't enough for the Rockets to overcome SU. The Orange won their first game of the day, 4-3.Â
Knight (5-2) pitched five innings, throwing three strikeouts and only allowing one run. Julianna Verni was credited with the save after stepping in to close for Knight.Â

GAME 2 VS. LIBERTY
Jackson recorded the first hit of the second game, singling to second base in the top of the first inning against the Flames. Â
In the top of the second inning, Zamora singled to left center. Liberty would be the first to put runs on the board, as the Flames hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the inning.Â
Davison recorded her second hit of the day, singling to left field in the top of the third inning. Liberty extended its lead, scoring another run in the bottom of the third frame.Â
The Flames would go on to score three additional runs in the game. Syracuse was unable to answer, falling to Liberty 7-0 in the second game of the day.Â

OF NOTEÂ
- Madison Knight's home run against Toledo was her fourth of the season and 18th of her career.Â
- Vanessa Flores and Kendall Gaunt each recorded two hits against the Rockets.Â
- Knight and Taylor Davison each had two RBIs in the first game of the day.Â
- The Orange drew seven walks against the Flames. Flores led the team, drawing four of those walks.Â

Syracuse will play its last game at the Liberty Softball Classic tomorrow, Sunday, Feb. 22 against Toledo. The first pitch is slated for 10 a.m. ET at the Liberty Softball Stadium.Â
