COLUMBIA, S.C.— The Orange softball team (3-2) defeated Winthrop (0-3) in eight innings, 8-7, on the final day of the Gamecock Invitational. Milija Seaton drove in Jadyn Burney in the top of the eighth inning to lift Syracuse past the Eagles.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Lauren Fox reached second base in the third inning on a line drive down the right-field line. Kendall Gaunt drew a walk, and Kaimi Tulua followed with a three-run home run over the center-field wall to put the Orange on the board.
In the fifth inning, Flores walked and Sophia Taliaferro entered as a pinch runner. Madison Knight also walked, advancing Taliaferro to second base. Grace Weaver was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Fox then singled through the right side, scoring Taliaferro and Knight.
Madelyn Lopez led off the sixth inning with a single to center field. Burney followed with a single, advancing Lopez to second. Flores singled to left to load the bases. Knight grounded out to third base, allowing Lopez to score. Seaton followed with a groundout to shortstop, which brought Burney home to tie the game at 7-7. Knight entered the circle in relief of Julianna Verni in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Burney singled to center field in the eighth inning and later stole second base during Mackenzie Knight's at-bat. She advanced to third on a groundout before Seaton reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Burney to give Syracuse the lead. Winthrop did not score in the bottom of the inning.
