
Orange Split Day 1 of Bevo Classic

AUSTIN, Texas- The SU softball team (4-3) went 1-1 on the day after a 2-1 win against Abilene Christian (0-10) and a 14-0 loss to No. 2 Texas (7-1) in five innings, at the Bevo Classic in Austin, Texas.
GAME 1 VS. ABILENE CHRISTIANÂ
In the bottom of the second inning, Vanessa Flores walked to get the Orange on base for the first time in the game. Sophia Taliaferro pinch ran for Flores, eventually stealing second base. Lauren Fox was able to reach first after Wildcat shortstop Emerson Meggers made an error. Milija Seaton singled to shortstop, loading the bases for 'Cuse. Kendall Gaunt stepped up to the plate, drawing a walk and sending Taliaferro across home plate to give Syracuse a 1-0 lead.Â
Abilene Christian tied up the game in the top of the sixth inning, but the Orange were quick to answer, regaining the lead in the bottom of the frame. Rose Cano singled to first base and was replaced by Fox to pinch run. Kiara Bellido made her first appearance of the season, stepping in for Seaton. Bellido hit a deep ball to left field, adding a double to the scoresheet. Gaunt hit a sacrifice fly to left field, giving Fox enough time to tag up and reach home. Syracuse pulled away with a 2-1 win to start off its weekend at the Bevo Classic.Â
GAME 2 VS. NO. 2 TEXASÂ
Grace Weaver reached first base after a throwing error by Longhorns' Alisa Sneed at third base in the top of the second inning. Â
At the top of the third, Madelyn Lopez placed a perfect bunt, making her way to first base. Jadyn Burney singled through right field, advancing Lopez to second base. In the bottom of the inning, Victoria Hunter of Texas grounded into a double play to shortstop, as Gaunt threw to Fox at second base, who relayed to Knight at first.Â
Fox singled up the middle to give Syracuse its third hit against the Longhorns. Grace Weaver grounded out to the pitcher advancing Fox to second base. The Orange ultimately fell to the reigning national champions 14-0 in 5 innings.Â

OF NOTEÂ
- Madison Knight threw a complete game, pitching for seven innings against Abilene Christian.Â
- Five different Orange players recorded a hit against the Wildcats.Â
- Vanessa Flores had seven putouts in the matchup with ACU.Â
- The Orange did not allow a home run today. Texas had slugged a home run in every other game this weekend.Â
UP NEXTÂ
The Orange will face No. 2 Texas one last time this weekend at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 14. SU will round out the day, taking on NIU at 8:30 p.m.Â
