COLLEGE PARK, Md.- The Orange softball team (9-6) defeated UMBC (2-5) 11-1 in five innings at the second day of the Terrapin Invitational. Jadyn Burney delivered a grand slam for her first home run of her career, along with two runs, three hits and five runs batted in, to give 'Cuse the win over the Retrievers.Â
HOW IT HAPPENEDÂ
In the bottom of the first inning, leadoff hitter Burney placed a bunt to the pitcher, but successfully made it to first base. Peyton Schemmer pinch ran for Harmony Jackson who drew a walk, as Burney stole second base. Taylor Davison singled, loading the bases, and Madison Knight was walked to send Burney across home plate. Â
Still in the first inning, Madelyn Lopez reached on a fielder's choice, but the Retrievers caught Schemmer out at home. Vanessa Flores singled to left field, giving Davison the go ahead to score, and Lauren Fox hit a sacrifice fly to bring Knight home to add another run. Kaylee Eubanks drew a walk, loading the bases once again for 'Cuse. Gabby Lantier followed with a walk as well, bringing Lopez across home plate. Â
Burney stepped up to the plate for her second at bat of the first inning, sending the ball high over the right field fence, recording a grand slam for her first career home run. Flores, Eubanks, Lantier and Burney all stepped across home plate to give Syracuse an 8-0 lead after the bottom of the first.Â
Jackie Pengel (3-3) struck out three batters in the top of the second inning to keep the Orange in control. In the bottom of the third inning, Fox reached first base after a successful bunt. Eubanks was hit by a pitch to stand on first base, but both runners advanced after a wild pitch was thrown during Lantier's plate appearance. Lantier would go on to draw a walk and load the bases. Burney placed a bunt, putting pressure on the defense who were unable to get Fox out at home as she added another run to the board for 'Cuse. Jackson was hit by a pitch to advance the bases once again and bring Eubanks home to score. Davison flied out to left field, giving Lantier a chance to cross home plate. She successfully reached after a throwing error by UMBC.Â
In the top of the fifth inning, the Retrievers managed to score after two Retrievers hit doubles and advanced around the bases, but it wasn't enough as Syracuse secured an 11-1 run-rule. Â
