The Syracuse women's rowing team kicked off its spring campaign at the B1G/ACC/Ivy Dual in Cherry Hill, N.J., this weekend. The 10th-ranked Orange began their season against #9 Michigan, #11 Penn and #14 Ohio State.
"It was overall good first day on the water," head coach Luke McGee said. "We saw some really positive stuff from the teams racing their first 2K of the season and definitely some elements to work on as we move forward."
In the morning, Syracuse lined up with Penn and Michigan with the Varsity Four (7:25.74) winning the placing second in the first race of the day for the Orange, behind Michigan (7:22.8) and ahead of Penn (7:38.34). The Second Varsity Eight (2V8) was the first win of the day for SU, crossing the 2,000-meter finish line in 6:37.0 ahead of Michigan (6:43.97) and Penn (6:47.41).
The varsity eight (6:27.88) narrowly missed Michigan (6:27.17) while Penn earned the win in the heat crossing the finish in 6:25.9 The 2V4 raced just Penn after a late scratch by U of M, beating the Quakers by open water.
The final race of the morning featured both Syracuse's 3V8 and 4V8 finishing second and third, respectively, behind Penn (6:57.8).
In the afternoon, Syracuse won five of its six races against the Buckeyes including a 3.2 victory in the varsity eight and a 7.9 second win in the 2V8.
"I thought the boat of the day was the 2V8 and their race against Michigan," McGee added. "There's a lot of new faces in that boat, but for their first trip down the course together they put together a really solid effort there."
Syracuse now turns its attention to the Cayuga Cup on April 5 in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. The Orange line up with #6 Yale and Cornell as Yale currently holds the rights after winning back-to-back years in 2023 and 2024.
"As designed with the races this season, we're facing top competition at every race and I just think those top teams make you realize where you are or what you need to work on," McGee said. "I thought that everybody had some good elements to work on or that need to be improved upon and that's why we do the early season racing and we are lucky that we have a competitor like Yale that we get to face here coming up in two weeks."
