
'Cuse Outlasted By Miami

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Trailing 3-1, the No. 45 ranked Syracuse University women's tennis team (7-3, 0-3 ACC) won consecutive singles matches to draw even with Miami on Friday, but the Hurricanes (2-4, 0-1 ACC) outlasted the Orange in a third-set tiebreaker at the No. 5 position to clinch a 4-3 victory at Drumlins Country Club.
Anastasia Sysoeva came from 4-1 and two breaks down in the final set to defeat Raquel Gonzalez, the No. 78 player in the ITA singles rankings, 6-7 (2), 6-3, 7-5, at the No. 3 spot to level the score at 3-3. However, Miami's Xinyi Nong came from a break down at the No. 5 position to defeat Shiori Ito and secure the win for the Hurricanes.
The Hurricanes opened the match by taking the doubles point after winning at both the Nos. 1 and 2 positions, despite Serafima Shastova and Monika Wojcik's victory at the No. 3 spot.

THE RUNDOWN
- Shastova and Wojcik tallied a win for the Orange in doubles after defeating Jaquelyn Ogunwale and Aely Arai, 6-3, at the No. 3 spot. It was the third win for the duo this season, with the last two coming in ACC play.
- Miami won at the Nos. 1 and 2 spots to clinch the doubles point and go ahead 1-0.
- Wojcik tied the contest at 1-1 with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Miami's Daria Volosova at the No. 6 spot. It was the freshman's first ACC singles victory and her seventh overall this season, as she improved her record to 7-2 on the campaign.
- The Hurricanes picked up wins at the Nos. 1 and 4 positions to go ahead 3-1. Alexa Noel, who won the 2024 NCAA singles championship, came from 0-5 down in the seocnd set at the No. 1 spot to defeat reigning ACC Player of the Week Miyuka Kimoto in straight sets.
- Nelly Knezkova added her seventh win in singles play at the No. 2 spot with a 6-4, 6-3 result at the No. 2 spot against Jaquelyn Ogunwale. All seven of her victories have come at the top two singles positions. The triumph cut Miami's lead to 3-2.
- At the No. 3 singles position, Sysoeva came from a break down in the opening set to win it in a tiebreak. However, Sysoeva dropped the second set, 3-6. Down 1-4 in the third, she reeled off four straight games to take a 5-4 advantage before Gonzalez held for 5-5. After Sysoeva held, she went ahead 0-40 on the Gonzalez serve in the following game. Gonzalez saved two match points but Sysoeva converted the third to clinch the win and even the score at 3-3. The victory was her second of the season in singles and her first in ACC play.
- After dropping the first set at the No. 5 spot, Ito fought back from a break down on multiple occasions in the second set before finally taking it in a tiebreak, 7-5. Ito grabbed an early break in the third and served for the match leading 6-5, but Nong broke back to force a decisive breaker. Nong took a 4-2 lead into the change of ends and won the next two points to go up 6-2. Ito saved one match points but Nong converted the second to clinch the victory for the Hurricanes.
- This was Syracuse's first match to be decided by a 4-3 score since the Orange upset No. 8 NC State last season.
- Miami now leads the all-time series against Syracuse, 7-1.
