
Fought To The End: ‘Cuse Advances To Round 3

CARY, N.C – The No.16 seed Syracuse womens tennis team (11-10, 4-10 ACC) upset No. 9 seed Clemson (10-14, 3-9 ACC) with a 4-3 win, Wednesday morning, at the Cary Tennis Park, in the second round of the ACC tournament.
During the regular season, on March 23, the Tigers were victorious with a 4-2 win over the Orange, where they had won the doubles point and continued to see success with wins from Sophia Hatton, Annabelle Davis and Artemis Aslanisvili in singles play. The two wins from Syracuse came from Miyuka Kimoto and Monika Wojcik.
Today's match came down to the wire, as Kimoto was in her third set against Amelie Smejkalova with Syracuse and Clemson tied 3-3. She trailed 4-5, but evened the score, 40-40, to move on to win the point, tying the match 5-5. Kimoto was up 40-0, putting her in the lead 6-5. The match tied again 30-30, but Kimto came out on top, clinching the match for Syracuse with 7-5 third set win.

Syracuse will continue its run in the ACC tournament facing No. 8 seed Georgia Tech on Thursday, April 17 at 10 a.m.

- At the No. 1 doubles position the Orange duo Nelly Knezkova and Shiori Ito upset ITA's 37th ranked pairing Gaia Parravicini and Smejkalova, 6-3.
- Serafima Shastova and Wojcik def. Annabelle Davis and Sophia Hatton, 6-4 at the No. 3 position. Previously in the season, Syracuse lost to this duo.
- Kimoto and Anastasia Sysoeva clinched the doubles point for the Orange in a 6-3 defeat against their opponents.
- Shastova was the first to put Syracuse in the lead 2-0 after winning at the No. 3 singles spot, 6-3, 6-2. She now improves to 12-5 on the season in singles.
- At the No. 2 spot in singles Knezkova won against No. 123 ranked opponent Hatton with the score 6-2,6-3 which put the Orange in the lead, 3-1.
- Ito put up a fight against Candela Yecora forcing a third set after staying alive in the second 6-1 after she Yecora won the first 6-3. Ito came fell in the third 5-7. Yecora tied the final score 3-3.
- Kimoto clinched the match for Syracuse to advance to round three of the ACC tournament.
- Every match at every position was played through this morning. Two of the six went into a third set and were the last matches playing to determine a winner.
