Cal Secures 5-2 Victory Over Syracuse

BERKELEY, C.A. – The No. 56 Syracuse women's tennis team (8-5, 1-5 ACC) fell to No. 72 California (4-4, 2-0 ACC), 5-2, on Saturday at the Hellman Tennis Complex. It was the first meeting between the two teams since 1995.
The Orange fought hard but were unable to overcome the Golden Bears despite two singles wins by Serafima Shastova and Monika Wojcik. Syracuse was unable to secure the doubles point, which proved to be a key factor in the final result.
Four of California's players were recognized in the ITA's updated rankings on March 4. No. 106 Berta Passola Folch clinched the match for the Golden Bears.
THE RUNDOWN
The Orange are on the road again in Atlanta, Ga., to face ITA's No. 22 ranked team, Georgia Tech on Friday, March 21 at 4 p.m.

THE RUNDOWN
- No. 74 Shastova and Wojcik defeated Tiziana-M Schomburg and Naomi Xu in doubles play, 6-4. This was the duo's fifth win together and was the only win in doubles for the Orange against California.
- Shastova won in singles with a result of 5-4 after Cal's Greta Greco Lucchina retired from the match. This tied the overall score 1-1.
- At the No. 6 position, Wojcik won against Naomi Xu, 6-4, 6-2. Wojcik now holds the most singles wins from an Orange player this season with nine.
- No. 90 Miyuka Kimoto competed against another ranked opponent today who was ranked No. 40, but lost 6-1, 6-0.
- Anastasia Sysoeva faced her fourth ITA ranked opponent of the season today at the No. 3 position.
- California leads the all-time series 2-0 against Syracuse.
