Shastova’s Fall Season Ends At NCAA Individual Championships

WACO, Texas – Serafima Shastova's excellent fall season came to end Tuesday, as the Syracuse University women's tennis sophomore was defeated in the round of 64 in singles at the NCAA Individual Championships.

Shastova fell to Elza Tomase of Tennessee, the event's No. 4 seed and the No. 62 ranked player in the preseason ITA singles rankings, 3-6, 1-6. Shastova trailed 4-0 in the opening set before winning three straight games to get back on serve. However, Tomase rebroke in the ensuing game and proceeded to serve out the first frame.

In the second set, Shastova held her serve to start, but Tomase then reeled off six straight games to win the match.

Shastova finishes the fall season with a 13-2 record in singles. The loss snapped her 10-match winning streak, which began with her title run at ITA New England Regionals.
