Syracuse Defeats Cornell In Season Opener

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse University women's tennis team (1-0) defeated Cornell (0-1) on Wednesday at Drumlins Country Club in its season opener, 6-1.

The Orange won all three doubles matches to take the doubles point and picked up five wins in singles to earn its first victory of the campaign.

THE RUNDOWN

Anastasia Sysoeva and Miyuka Kimoto picked up Syracuse's first doubles victory of the season, winning 6-2 at the No. 1 spot. The duo trailed 0-40 in the final game but won the last four points to close out the match.
At the No. 2 spot, Monika Wojcik and Nelly Knezkova won 6-3 to clinch the doubles point for the Orange. This was Wojcik's first collegiate match and win, and was Knezkova's first dual win for Syracuse.
Tied 5-5 at the No. 3 doubles spot, Shiori Ito and Serafima Shastova won the final two games to secure a 7-5 triumph. It was Shastova's first dual victory for the Orange.
At the No. 5 position Constance Levivier was the first win in singles for 'Cuse, winning 6-2, 6-1. The victory was the fifth in dual play for Levivier at Syracuse.
Knezkova earned her first dual singles win with SU by defeating Cornell's Sage Loudon at the No. 2 singles spot, 6-1, 6-3.
Ito clinched the match for Syracuse with a 6-3, 6-2 result at No. 4 singles.
After picking up her first career doubles win earlier in the match, Wojcik added her first singles win with the Orange at the No. 6 spot with a 6-4, 6-3 result.
Kimoto won 6-2, 7-6 (0) at the No. 1 spot to round out Syracuse's victories. She was up 5-2 in the second set before Cornell rallied back to force a tiebreak. However, Kimoto pitched a shutout in the tiebreak, winning 7-0 to secure a straight-sets win.

Up Next
The Orange return to Drumlins for a double-header this weekend. On Saturday, 'Cuse will play James Madison at 11 a.m. followed by another match Sunday against Fordham at 11 a.m. Sunday's match will be streamed live on ACCNX.
