Orange Go Unbeaten On Day One At Big Red Invite

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Syracuse University women's tennis team delivered an unbeaten record on Friday's opening day of the Big Red Invite, as the Orange won four singles and two doubles decisions to kick off the tournament. Cornell is hosting the event at the Reis Tennis Center.
In total, Syracuse won all eight of its singles sets Friday and went 49-21 in games across the four matches. Serafima Shastova was the most efficient, dropping just three games in a 6-3, 6-0 victory against Cornell's Alexandra Savu. Shastova has now won seven consecutive singles matches, a streak that began at ITA New England Regionals. The sophomore improved to 10-1 in singles this fall with the victory and has now won 11 sets where she dropped two or fewer games.
Shiori Ito was also economical in her singles victory, as the senior dispatched Tanya Fan of Cornell by a 6-2, 6-2 score. It was Ito's fourth win of the fall, all of which have come in straight sets. Nelly Knezkova also cruised to a straight-set triumph, as she took down Martina Marica of Cornell 6-2, 6-4. It was also her fourth singles win of the fall.
Rounding out the singles victories for 'Cuse was Constance Levivier, who defeated Deanna Lasorda of Penn State 6-2, 7-6. The victory snapped a two-match losing streak for Levivier, who has now played five tiebreak sets this season, the most of any Syracuse player.
Syracuse debuted two new doubles pairings Friday and they combined to drop just two games. In their first appearance together this fall, Knezkova and Shastova shutout Valeria Mora and Mercedes Velasco of Niagara in a 6-0 victory. It was Knezkova's team-best eighth doubles win this fall. Ito and Levivier also played together for the first time, teaming up for a 6-2 win over Le Moyne's duo of Ella Fernando and Stella Simeonova.
Play at the Big Red Invite will continue Saturday beginning at 10 a.m.
