SYRACUSE, N.Y.- The Orange softball team (16-17, 3-10) shut out Colgate (20-23, 7-5) in both games of the doubleheader. Syracuse won the first game 1-0 and claimed a 6-0 victory to cap off the night. Julianna Verni nearly threw a no-hitter in the second game, as Madison Knight tossed a complete game in the first and hit a home run later in the second game.Â
GAME 1 VS. COLGATEÂ
The Orange started off hot in the top of the first inning as leadoff hitter Jaden Burney drew a walk. On the very next pitch, Burney stole second base, making her 18-for-18 this season. Madelyn Lopez singled to left field, advancing Burney to third base. Madison Knight grounded out to shortstop, but Burney was able to score to put the Orange on the board early. Â
The one run would be enough for the Orange with stellar pitching from senior Madison Knight (9-5), who threw nine strikeouts as Syracuse took the victory in the first game of the doubleheader 1-0.Â
GAME 2 VS. COLGATEÂ
Madison Knight put Syracuse on the board first, hitting a solo home run off the first pitch in the bottom of the fourth inning. Vanessa Flores drew a walk in her plate appearance, and Taylor Davison stepped in to pinch run. Davison advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Kaylee Eubanks singled to left field, advancing Davison to third base. Eubanks reached second base on the throw. Kendall Gaunt stepped up to the plate, hitting a home run into deep left field to add three runs to the board for Syracuse.Â
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Gaunt singled to left field as Lauren Fox drew a walk to put Orange runners on first and second bases. Rose Cano doubled into right field, sending both runners home.Â
Julianna Verni was set to complete a no-hitter until two Raiders recorded hits in the top of the final inning. Colgate was unable to bring runners home, as Syracuse claimed a 6-0 win in the second game of the doubleheader.Â
