Syracuse alum. National Champion. And now head coach. Regy Thorpe was formally introduced as the fourth head coach in the history of the Syracuse women's lacrosse program on Wednesday, June 18 at the Lally Athletics Complex in front of the media, athletics department staff, family and friends.
Â
Thorpe was introduced by Orange Director of Athletics John Wildhack, who shared that Thorpe's detailed and comprehensive vision for the program stood out to the selection committee.
Â
"His vision is complimented by his outstanding coaching career," Wildhack said. "Two NCAA Championship games, eight Final Fours and 13 NCAA Tournament appearances. And his college coaching career, as distinguished as it is, is complimented by experience coaching U.S. national teams as well."
Â
Thorpe returns to his alma mater where he coached alongside Gary Gait for Orange women's lacrosse for 10 seasons. Â During that time, the Orange advanced to Championship Weekend six times, including five consecutive trips from 2012-16, and a pair of National Championship Game appearances. Thorpe shared what he envisions for the program under his watch.
Â
"We're going to build around our pillars – the pillars that made Syracuse lacrosse one of the most elite schools in the country," Thorpe said. "Alumni: we're going to get our alumni back engaged and be a program that values our past and we're going to lean on them for support. Our fan base: we're going to continue to build and engage the fan base. Year in and year out we lead the country in attendance. And then our community: our players will have strong impact and presence in the community. And then the No. 1 for us is culture. We're going to build and bring in players that understand the atmosphere we want here. A culture that the families, players, fans and community and people all over the country are going to be proud of."
