Orange Opens NCAA Play With 15-9 Win

NEW HAVEN, Connecticut – Syracuse defeated Brown, 15-9, in the first round of the NCAA Women's Lacrosse Tournament on Friday, May 9 in New Haven, Connecticut. The Orange move on to face No. 7 seed Yale in the second round on Sunday, May 11 at 2 p.m.
Emma Ward led Syracuse with six points on three goals and three assists. Emma Muchnick also had a hat trick to increase her season total of goals to a team-best 34. Ashlee Volpe and Mileena Cotter had two goals apiece as eight different players scored for the Orange.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Syracuse (10-8) trailed by one before an own goal evened the score at 3-3. Muchnick followed with her second of the day to give the Orange the lead for good at 4-3 after the first quarter.
'Cuse pulled away in the second quarter. Caroline Trinkaus and Volpe netted back-to-back goals to extend the lead to three. After Brown (10-7) briefly halted the Orange scoring run, Cotter, Muchnick and Bri Peters all scored to give Syracuse a 9-4 advantage. Annie Parker and Sam DeVito also found the back of the net before intermission as the Orange took an 11-6 lead into the locker room at halftime.
After Cotter started the scoring in the second half, Brown used a 3-1 scoring run to cut the deficit to four, but that was as close as the Bears could get as Ward recorded the final goal of the third quarter and the only goal of the fourth to send the Orange to the NCAA Tournament second round.
OF NOTE
Syracuse outshot Brown, 30-24 and picked up 17 ground balls to 12 for the Bears. Meghan Rode posted nine draw controls, helping the Orange to a 15-11 advantage in the draw circle.
With the win, Syracuse improved its all-time record in NCAA Tournament play to 29-21.

The Orange take on Yale on Sunday, May 11 in the second round at 2 p.m. on ESPN+. The teams met in New Haven in April with the Bulldogs posting a 13-10 victory.
