#9 Orange Extend Winning Streak

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – No. 9/8 Syracuse posted its third-straight win Sunday, defeating No. 20/21 Notre Dame, 12-11, in the JMA Wireless Dome. In addition to extending their winning streak, the Orange posted their fourth win against a top-20 opponent this season.

Emma Ward led Syracuse with six points (2g, 4a), increasing her career point total to 297. Caroline Trinkaus scored a team-high four goals, marking the fourth time this season the freshman has recorded three or more goals in a game. On the defensive end, Coco Vandiver caused three turnovers and picked up three ground balls.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Both squads had scoring runs in the first half that ended with Syracuse leading, 6-5. The Orange (7-4, 3-2) got off to a quick start, notching the final three goals of the first quarter for a 4-1 lead. The Fighting Irish (6-5, 1-4) responded with a 4-0 scoring run that gave Notre Dame its first lead of the day at 5-4. Gracie Britton halted the 'Cuse scoring drought and Ward found the back of the net with 17 seconds on the clock to give the Orange a one-goal advantage at intermission.

The teams were tied at 8-8 after the third period before Joely Caramelli scored the first goal of the fourth quarter to give Syracuse the lead for good. Carlie Desimone and Alexa Vogelman followed with goals, both on assists from Ward, to extend the lead to 11-8 with 10:40 remaining.

Notre Dame wouldn't go away and scored back-to-back goals to again get within one with 5:13 on the clock. After Kristen Shanahan's fifth goal of the day cut the deficit to 11-10, the Fighting Irish won the ensuing draw with a chance to tie the game, but 'Cuse goalkeeper Daniella Guyette made a pair of saves to keep the lead at one.

The Orange turned it over on the clear, but Vandiver intercepted a Notre Dame pass, giving possession back to Syracuse and Trinkaus' fourth goal of the day less than a minute later pushed the lead to 12-10. Notre Dame found the back of the net with 30 seconds remaining and won the ensuing draw but turned it over and the Orange ran out the clock for the win.

The game was played in front of a crowd of 3,622. It marks the largest single-game crowd in program history.

Guyette finished with 11 saves. She has now reached double figures in saves in two-straight games and seven this season.

For the second-straight game the Orange defense held their opponents' leading goal scorer below her season average. Notre Dame's Madison Rassas entered the game with a team-high 28 goals. She finished with one.

Caramelli led the Orange in the draw circle with nine draw controls. Overall, Syracuse won 15-of-26 draws in the game.
