Ward Reaches Milestone in #8 Orange Win Over #11 Cavaliers

SYRACUSE, New York – Syracuse grad student Emma Ward recorded her 300th career point in the Orange's 13-12 victory against No. 11 Virginia on Saturday. The victory extends Syracuse's winning streak to a season-best four games and improves its record to 8-4 overall, 4-2 in ACC action.

The game was decided the in the final minutes as Virginia (7-4, 3-3) rallied from a four-goal deficit heading into the fourth quarter to tie the score at 12-12 with 6:30 remaining. The teams remained deadlocked until freshman Caroline Trinkaus was awarded a free position with 3:01 on the clock. She drove toward the net and placed her shot inside the far post to give 'Cuse a 13-12 lead.

The Cavaliers won the ensuing draw and Fiona Allen's shot with 1:54 on the clock hit the post, resulting in a battle for the ground ball, which was controlled by Orange sophomore Carlie Desimone. Both teams committed turnovers in the final 1:15 and Virginia had the final possession with 35 seconds on the clock.

After a successful clear, Virginia called timeout with 17 seconds remaining. The 'Cuse defense did not allow a shot as the Orange posted their third-straight and fifth overall top-20 win of the season.

Ward joined rare company with her performance as she becomes just the seventh player in program history to post 300 career points. She ranks seventh on Syracuse's all-time scoring list with 301 points. Ward is just the third member of the Orange with more than 150 goals and 150 assists.

Freshman Mileena Cotter tied her career high with a team-best three goals in the win, while Desimone dished out a career-high three assists. Ward led the Orange with four points on a goal and three assists.

On the defensive end, goalkeeper Danny Guyette finished with eight saves.

The Orange celebrated Senior Day on Saturday and honored its graduating class in a pregame ceremony. The group has helped Syracuse to two ACC regular-season titles, three NCAA Tournament appearances and two trips to Championship Weekend.
