
#6 Orange Defeat Golden Bears

BERKELEY, California – No. 6 Syracuse returned to the win column with an 18-6 victory at California on Saturday. The Orange are now 9-5 overall and 5-2 in ACC play.
Nine different players scored at least one goal, with freshman Caroline Trinkaus leading the way with four. Gracie Britton and Alexa Vogelman each had a hat trick. Emma Ward recorded a game-high seven points on two goals and a season-best five assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Golden Bears (5-8, 0-7) started the scoring 37 seconds into the contest, but the Orange responded with five-straight goals to take the lead for good. Trinkaus scored three of her goals in the first half, helping Syracuse take a 9-5 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The second half was all Orange. Britton scored the first goal of the second half, which was the first of six unanswered goals for Syracuse in the third quarter. Ward had a goal and two assists during the scoring run, while Britton had two goals and an assist.
Annie Parker extended the scoring run with the first goal of the fourth quarter to push the lead to 16-5. California scored its only goal of the second half with 9:45 remaining before the Orange added a pair of goals as they posted their fifth-straight ACC victory.
OF NOTE
The 'Cuse defense held the Golden Bears without a goal for more than 25 minutes. Goalkeeper Danny Guyette made eight saves and picked up two ground balls, while Sam Devito picked up two ground balls, caused two turnovers and posted two draw controls.
Ward moved into second place on Syracuse's all-time assists list with her performance in the victory. She now has 161 career assists, moving past Meaghan Tyrrell (158) on the program's career ledger. Ward now is three assists away from tying Katie Rowan's record of 164.
