SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse swept Colgate in its first midweek doubleheader of the season, 2-1, in nine innings, and 3-1, Wednesday afternoon at Skytop Stadium.
Senior Lindsey Hendrix and the duo of sophomores Madison Knight and Julianna Verni allowed just one Raider run in both ends of the twin bill as the Orange improve to 18-17 on the campaign. With the losses, Colgate holds a 13-23 overall record.
Syracuse used the long ball to win the second game as juniors Kelly Breen and Tessa Galipeau each launched solo home runs in the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME ONE:
A pitcher's duel throughout, senior Angel Jasso helped the Orange get on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the third with a sacrifice fly that plated sophomore Gabby Lantier.
Colgate later knotted the game at one in the sixth when Kiley Shelton hit a solo homer.
In the top of the ninth, the Raiders loaded the bases with nobody out. Hendrix was able to escape the jam by inducing a groundout for the force out at home, a foul out and a fly out to Jasso in center.
With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, freshman Makenzie Foster singled before Jasso worked a walk to load the bases for sophomore Madelyn Lopez. Colgate starter Bailey Misken hit Lopez with the second pitch of the at bat, allowing the game-winning run to score.
In Syracuse's second walk-off at Skytop Stadium, the nine-inning contest was the team's longest since March 27, 2022, at Georgia Tech.
Hendrix threw all nine innings for her eighth victory of the campaign. The southpaw fanned seven batters, allowing the lone run on five hits. Misken threw 8.2 innings for Colgate in the loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME TWO:
Knight and Verni continued Syracuse's stellar pitching performance on the day, the Knight striking out five batters in four innings of work.
The Orange plated its runs in the second, third and fourth innings of the contest, starting with Galipeau's bases loaded walk in the second. Breen doubled Syracuse's lead in the third, launching a 2-1 pitch from Colgate starter Maya Servedio off the scoreboard for her first homer of the season.
The Raiders cut the lead in half when Quinn Livesay scored in the top of the fourth. Galipeau responded in a big way, hitting a home run over the right-center wall to drive in her second run in the win.
That was all the run support the Orange pitcher's would need as Verni took the reins in the circle for the final three frames. The righty fanned three batters across the scoreless outing, earning her third save of 2024 to help secure the sweep.

OF NOTE:
- Syracuse extended its advantage to 10-4 all-time against Colgate. The Orange are 8-2 at home and have held the Raiders to one run or less in nine of the victories.
- Wednesday was the fourth doubleheader against Colgate and first twin bill sweep since the team's first ever meeting on April 10, 2001. Syracuse won both contests, 1-0, with the first game also lasting nine innings.
- Hendrix's 9.0 innings pitched was the longest outing by a Syracuse pitcher since Kaia Oliver went nine innings on Feb. 20, 2021 at North Carolina.
- With her stolen base in the second game, Posner is the first Syracuse player to have at least 10 home runs and 10 stolen bases in the same season since Stephanie Watts (10 HR, 17 SB) and Lisaira Daniels (10 HR, 18 SB) both achieved the mark in 2012.
- With Verni's save, the righty is now tied with Oliver (2021) for the most saves by a sophomore in program history.
- Breen has recorded a hit in seven straight ballgames, batting .522 over the stretch.
