SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Syracuse softball team (27-22, 6-18 ACC) dropped both games of Saturday's doubleheader to Cal (35-18, 11-13 ACC), concluding the 2025 season at Skytop Stadium. The Orange finish the year with 27 wins, just one shy of last season's total, including six in ACC play, highlighted by an upset over Duke and a series sweep of Boston College.
Â
In game one, the Golden Bears run-ruled the Orange in six innings, handing Syracuse a 9-0 loss and forcing a must-win scenario in the regular season finale to keep ACC Championship hopes alive. The second game turned into a marathon, stretching 11 innings, with Syracuse battling back from a 2-0 deficit to keep its season alive. But a two-run home run by Cal in the top of the 11th sealed a 4-2 win, ending the Orange's 2025 campaign.
Â
Madelyn Lopez capped a historic season for the Orange, finishing with a .430 batting average — the second-highest single-season mark in program history. She led Syracuse in nearly every offensive category, totaling 61 hits, 32 runs, 29 RBIs, 23 walks, a .563 slugging percentage, and a .509 on-base percentage.
Â
Family, friends, and fans of the Orange players are invited to return to Skytop Softball Stadium tomorrow for a special Senior Day ceremony honoring the program's six seniors: Kelly Breen, Laila Morales-Alves, Kate Dorazio, Angie Ramos, Tessa Galipeau, and Taylor Posner. The official time is to be announced.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME ONE:
Cal struck first in the top of the first inning with a three-run home run, then tacked on three more in the fifth with an RBI single and a two-run infield single. The Golden Bears extended their lead in the sixth, scoring three runs on a pair of RBI singles and a sacrifice fly to put the game into run-rule territory, ultimately securing a 9-0 win in six innings.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME TWO:
The Golden Bears opened the scoring with a solo home run in the top of the first and extended their lead with an RBI double in the third.
Â
With their season on the line, Syracuse had a chance to respond in the fourth inning, putting two runners on base but coming up empty. The Orange finally broke through in the sixth when Madison Knight cut the deficit in half, scoring on a sacrifice fly from Morales-Alves. Knight avoided the tag at home with a well-timed slide after a strong throw from Cal's centerfielder.
Â
In the bottom of the seventh, Galipeau came through in the clutch, grounding into a fielder's choice that brought home pinch runner Dorazio and sent the game into extra innings.
Â
After three scoreless extra frames, Cal reclaimed control with a two-run homer in the top of the 11th. Syracuse couldn't mount a comeback in the bottom half, as the Orange's season came to a close with a hard-fought 4-2 loss.
Â
OF NOTE:Â
Syracuse will honor its senior class with a ceremony tomorrow, Sunday, May 4, at Skytop Softball Stadium. Time is to be announced.
