'Cuse Sweeps UAlbany to Close Nonconference Slate

ALBANY, N.Y. -Â The Syracuse softball team (24-19, 3-15 ACC) swept UAlbany (19-20, 9-4 AE) in a midweek doubleheader on Wednesday at UAlbany Field. Madelyn Lopez recorded a career-high four hits to lead the Orange to a 6-0 shutout in game one. In game two, Vanessa Flores got Syracuse off to a strong start with a two-run home run, setting the tone for a 6-2 victory to secure the sweep.
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME ONE:
'Cuse broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth when Kelly Breen drove in Kate Dorazio with an RBI single. Lopez followed with another run-scoring single, bringing home Laila Morales-Alves. Moments later, Jadyn Burney laid down a bunt single, and a throw on the play allowed Gabby Lantier to come around and score, pushing the Orange lead to 3-0.
Later in the game, Lauren Fox sparked a three-run top of the seventh for the Orange by stealing home on a wild pitch. Tessa Galipeau and Angie Ramos followed with back-to-back RBI singles to extend the lead to 6-0. Starter Madison Knight and the Syracuse defense then closed things out in the bottom half, securing a 6-0 win in game one.
Knight delivered a complete game in the circle with seven strikeouts, allowing just four hits. The performance marked her third shutout of the season.

Vanessa Flores put the Orange on the board early with a two-run home run in the top of the first, but UAlbany responded quickly, tying the game with two runs of its own in the bottom half of the inning.
Burney gave 'Cuse the lead again in the top of the third with an RBI double, then came around to score on a Taylor Posner RBI single. The Orange tacked on insurance runs in the fifth and sixth innings with RBI singles from Breen and Posner.
Jackie Pengel took over for starter Julianna Verni in the fourth inning and held the Great Danes scoreless the rest of the way, helping secure a 6-2 win and doubleheader sweep for Syracuse over UAlbany.

Syracuse is set to host the first of its two regular-season-ending ACC series this weekend (April 26-28) against Boston College. All three games will be broadcast live on ACCN+, with game one scheduled for 3 p.m. on Friday.

- Syracuse took the field for the first time in 10 days, snapping its four-game losing streak that began at Cornell on April 9.
- The Orange finish their 2025 nonconference slate with 21 wins, tied for the most since the 2018 season.
- Lopez finished game one 4-for-4, making her the fourth player this season to have a four-hit outing in a game. Her four hits also marked a new career-best.
- The Flores home run was her second of the season.
- Breen had a pair of multi-hit outings, recording 2-for-4 performances in both games.
- The wins move Syracuse to 4-1 all-time against UAlbany.
