No. 9 Syracuse (14-5) punched its ticket to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament and will face No. 5 Navy (19-1) on Sunday at 1 p.m. in a first-ever meeting between the two programs.
The Opening Draw
The Orange used an 8-6 win over Loyola to push themselves into the second round. Caroline Trinkaus led the charge with three goals while Mileena Cotter scored two in the defensive battle.
The victory marked the first NCAA Tournament win of Regy Thorpe's head coaching career and the seventh-consecutive time the Orange have advanced past the first round.
Defensive Dominance
Syracuse's defense stifled the Loyola offense, holding the Greyhounds to just six goals. It was Loyola's lowest goal total in two seasons and the fewest by a Syracuse opponent in the NCAA Tournament since the Orange held Stony Brook to the same number in 2016.
Izzy Lahah continued to build onto her single-season caused turnovers record, adding three more against the Greyhounds. Senior Captain Coco Vandiver led the team with four as Syracuse compiled 16 total caused turnovers.
Dan Guyette finished with six saves and a .500 save percentage in the win over the Greyhounds.
Tournament Outlook
The Orange will play their second round game against No. 6 seeded Navy, who is hosting the opening two rounds. The winner of the game between Syracuse and Navy will face off with the winner of No. 3 seeded Maryland and Rutgers.
Each of the top-eight seeds still remain in the tournament. The Orange have already faced off with five of the other remaining 15 teams.
Scouting Navy
Navy has posted a record of 19-1 and won the Patriot League Championship this season, earning a top-eight seed and the chance to host the opening two rounds.
The Midshipmen boast an offense and defense that both rank inside the top 10 nationally, with the offense averaging 16.1 goals per game (3rd) and hold foes to 7.8 goals per game (8th).
Navy punched its ticket to the second round with a 17-16 triumph over UMass in the opening round. UMass held a 10-6 lead early in the third quarter, but Navy used an 8-2 run down the remainder of the frame to re-take a lead. The game was knotted up at 16-16 with five minutes to go until Navy's Mikayla Williams found the back of the net with 35 seconds left to move on.
The Midshipmen are led by Tewaaraton Award Finalist Alyssa Chung. She has compiled 106 points on 74 goals and 32 assists. She logged four points on a pair of goals and a couple of assists in the first round against UMass.
