Orange Advance in NCAA Tournament For Seventh-Straight Season
5/8/2026 9:01:00 PM | Women's Lacrosse
The No. 9 ranked Syracuse women's lacrosse team is moving on to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, as a strong defensive effort stifled No. 23 Loyola to its lowest scoring output in two seasons. Six goals also marked the lowest by a Syracuse opponent in the NCAA Tournament since 2016 when the Orange held Stony Brook to that same mark.
The Orange (14-5) advanced to the second round for the seventh-straight NCAA Tournament, earning first-year Head Coach Regy Thorpe his first tournament win, defeating the Greyhounds (12-8) 8-6. Syracuse will now face No. 6 seed Navy (19-1) on Sunday.
'Cuse never trailed in the matchup, jumping out to a 4-1 through the first quarter and a half of game action and never allowing Loyola to within a goal the rest of the way.
Syracuse nearly doubled-up Loyola in shots on goal, 22-12, but both goalies were stellar in the game. Daniella Guyette made six saves, while Loyola's Kennedy Buntrock had 14 saves.
The Orange defense continued their stellar play in front of Guyette, forcing 22 Greyhound turnovers – 16 of which caused. All-American defenders Coco Vandiver (4) and Izzy Lahah (3) led the team in that category
Offensively, Caroline Trinkaus led the way with three goals, while Mileena Cotter notched a pair and added an assist.
Trinkaus opened the scoring less than three minutes into the game, before Delaney Jackson put Loyola on the board with 5:16 remaining in the opening quarter.
Mackenzie Rich took the lead back less than a minute later, and 'Cuse never trailed again. Emma Muchnick and Cotter each scored in the first-six minutes of the second quarter to go on a three-goal run and open a 4-1 lead.
The teams alternated goals the rest of the way. Ava Kane scored to pull Loyola back to within a pair, but Trinkaus' two third-quarter goals send the Orange to the fourth with a 6-3 lead.
Cotter and Molly Guzik each found the back of the net in the fourth quarter to give Syracuse the ultimate result of 8-6.
Syracuse and Navy will play at 1 p.m. on Sunday, with the game to be broadcast on ESPN+.
