SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- With one second on the clock in the fourth overtime, Syracuse University's Caroline Trinkaus called game and scored the game-winning goal for a 10-9 win for No. 3 Syracuse over No. 19 Notre Dame at the JMA Wireless Dome on Saturday afternoon.
Playing the longest game in Syracuse (12-3, 7-2 ACC) women's lacrosse history, Trinkaus finished the hat trick with her third goal of the day to win it and extend the nation's longest active winning streak to 12. Trinkaus finished with a four-point day with an assist. Ashlee Volpe posted five points on two goals and three assists with Gracie Britton going for a goal and two assists, including the game-winning helper. Daniella Guyette made nine saves in the win, including two during the four overtime periods to preserve the fourth-longest winning streak in program history.
Coco Vandiver logged six caused turnovers — tied for the second most in a single game in program history — while Izzy Lahah added two, bringing both to 40 on the season. The duo became the first pair of teammates in program history to each reach the mark in a single season.
Notre Dame (11-4, 5-4 ACC) got a two goal effort from Kate Timarky while splitting time in goal. Isabel Pithie made four saves and allowed five while Ceci Patterson made one save.
Notre Dame and the Orange traded goals in the first quarter, with Volpe and Britton each netting goals in the opening frame to keep it knotted up at 2-2 after 15 minutes of play. The Fighting Irish stifled the Orange offense in the second quarter, with Emma Muchnick scoring the lone goal in the quarter at the 3:57 mark. Notre Dame scored twice in the quarter to take a 4-3 lead into the break.
The Fighting Irish got on the board first in the second half before the Orange drew level at 5-5 with goals from Mileena Cotter and Volpe just over a minute apart. Notre Dame retook the lead 30 seconds later, but the Orange offense answered.
After Notre Dame's sixth goal, Syracuse scored four unanswered goals. Bri Peters and Mackenzie Rich got on the board in the third to take a 7-6 lead into the fourth quarter. Trinkaus scored the next two in the fourth, giving the Orange a 9-6 lead with 7:43 to go.
Notre Dame closed, though, rattling off three goals in a four minute span to tie it up at 9-9. Neither team was able to find the back of the net before the clock struck zero, sending the game to overtime.
Neither team mustered a shot in the first overtime. The Orange put the pressure on, putting two shots on net in the second overtime, but both shots were turned away. Guyette answered in the third overtime with two saves of her own to keep the Orange alive.Â
The game appeared destined for a fifth overtime, but Trinkaus had other plans and ended the game with a goal with just one second on the clock. The game was the third in program history to reach a fourth overtime and the first since May 6, 2010 when the Orange took down Notre Dame, 12-11.
Syracuse hits the road to wrap up the regular season, taking on long-time rival Boston College Thursday night in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts. Game time is slated for 5:30 p.m. on ESPNU at Alumni Stadium.
