The Syracuse women's lacrosse team's season came to an end in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The sixth-seeded, No. 5 Navy (20-1) used a furious second-half comeback to defeat No. 9 Syracuse in Annapolis, 11-10 in overtime.
After Syracuse jumped out to a 9-3 first half lead, a six-goal Midshipmen run over the final 18 minutes of regulation sent the game to overtime. Alyssa Chung scored the game winner in the extra frame to advance Navy to the quarterfinals.
Head Coach Regy Thorpe finishes his first season at the helm with a four-win improvement for the program over last season and a trip to the second round of the tournament.
The Orange brought another stout defensive effort, a hallmark of the season for 'Cuse, as the Mids tied their lowest scoring output of the season. Navy entered the game averaging over 16 goals per game on the season.
Offensively, the Orange were mostly efficient, connecting on 10 of their 13 shots on goal. They chased All-American goalie Felicia Giglio before halftime after scoring on nine of their 10 shots on goal. Ultimately, it wasn't enough to come away victorious.
Caroline Trinkaus tied her career high with four goals and adding two assists for a career-best six points. Molly Guzik added a hat trick, while Emma Muchnick, Mileena Cotter and Mackenzie Rich each added tallies.
Defensively Izzy Lahah once again led the team with three caused turnovers. Kaci Benoit, Coco Vandiver and Courtney Mclay each had two.
Navy jumped out to a 2-0 lead midway through the first quarter on goals from Maggie DeFabio and Taylor Miles, but 'Cuse scored nine of the next 10 goals to take control of the first half.
Guzik scored two goals in less than two minutes to even the game, before Cotter found the back of the net with 1:56 left in the first quarter to give the Orange their first advantage.
Trinkaus scored her first of the game just 39 seconds into the second frame to push the lead to two. After Navy's Bella Paradiso halted the run, Trinkaus started heating up. She scored three of the next four – with Rich adding a goal and assist in the run – before Muchnick ended the half with a score to conclude a 5-0 run and send Syracuse to the locker room with a 9-3 advantage.
Emma Kennedy scored for Navy nearly 10 minutes into the second half to break the game's longest scoring drought, but Muchnick answered right back less than two minutes later off a feed from Trinkaus.
Navy's First Team All-American attacker Alyssa Chung finally broke through for a goal with 2:51 left in the third, before Maggie DeFabio scored back-to-back goals to pull the Midshipmen back within three at 10-7.
Chung scored twice in a row to pull Navy within one, before Anna Gotterup's tally with 1:09 left in regulation sent the game to overtime.
Chung found the back of the net on the opening possession to end the game.
