MIAMI – The Syracuse University women's tennis team battled but could not overcome Florida International, falling 7-0 on Sunday afternoon.
Syracuse (2-2) saw two singles matches head to three sets, but the Orange could not erase an early deficit.
Beginning with doubles action, the Florida International duo of Aleksandra Simeva and Jelena Vico won the No. 2 doubles contest over Leena Bennetto and Constance Levivier, 6-4, before Monika Wojcik and Emma Scaldalai were edged 6-4 in No. 3 doubles by Maria Lucia Araoz-Gosn and Vittoria Baccino. The No. 1 doubles matchup that saw Anastasia Sysoeva and Nelly Knezkova square off with Viktorie Hazmukova and Katerina Mandelikova went unfinished.
Wojcik dropped the first set of her No. 3 singles matchup with Baccino, 6-2, before storming back with a 6-4 win in the second set to force a third. Wojcik ultimately came up short, dropping the third set 6-4. Scaldalai also dropped her first set in the No. 5 singles matchup with Araoz-Gosn before battling back in the second set, winning 6-4. Scaldalai was edged in the 10-point tiebreak, losing 10-8.
The Orange return home to Drumlins Country Club next weekend for a contest with the University of Massachusetts on Saturday, Feb. 7. Match time is set for 11 a.m.
