SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse University women's tennis team put up a staunch fight but were ultimately nipped by No. 24 Clemson, falling 4-1 on Sunday afternoon at the Drumlins Tennis Club.
The Orange (7-12, 3-9) battled on all three doubles courts but ultimately dropped the point. The Tigers pulled in front early as Artemis Aslanisvili and Sophie Clayton defeated Leena Bennetto and Constance Levivier 6-4. Syracuse refused to quit, fighting back in the remaining two matches. The No. 2 doubles match saw Serafima Shastova and Monika Wojcik survive four match points to force a tiebreak. Talia Neilson-Gatenby and Romana Cisovska triumphed in the tiebreak to secure the doubles point. At No. 1 doubles, Nelly Knezkova and Anastasia Sysoeva faced a 5-2 deficit against No. 42 Jade Groen and Rinon Okuwaki. The pair won four consecutive points but were bested in the tiebreak.
In singles play, Emma Scaldalai made quick work of Clayton, winning 6-0, 6-2 to level the match. Neilson-Gatenby then knocked off Wojcik 6-2, 6-2 to put the Tigers back in front. Aslanisvili picked up a third point after defeating Bennetto 6-2, 7-6 (7-2). No. 58 Okuwaki outlasted Shastova in a back-and-forth affair, triumphing 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 to secure the match for Clemson. Knezkova led in the third set against Cisovska, but the match went unfinished.
Syracuse heads to the ACC Women's Tennis Championship next week with matchups and times being finalized at a later date.
