SYRACUSE, N.Y. – It was down to the wire at nearly every match, but Syracuse University women's tennis fell 4-2 against No. 41 SMU Sunday afternoon at Drumlins Country Club in the first-ever ACC meeting between the teams.
Despite SMU picking up the doubles point, the competition was tight. Caroline McGinley and Amelie van Impe, ranked 10th nationally, edged out Syracuse's pair of Anastasia Sysoeva and Nelly Knezkova by a 6-2 count. Second-flight doubles was even closer with SMU's Natalie Stasny and Sophie Llewellyn nipping the Orange (5-6, 1-3 ACC) pairing of Monika Wojcik and Serafima Shastova. Constance Levivier and Leena Bennetto won their third-flight doubles 7-5.
The Mustangs (9-4, 3-3 ACC) won the first singles point from Addison Comiskey over Emma Scaldalai 6-1, 6-4. Bennetto cut the SMU lead back to 2-1 as she picked up a 6-2, 6-2 win over Stasny at number five singles.
At number two singles, Llewellyn edged out Shastova 6-4, 6-3 to put the Mustangs back up 3-1 but Syracuse again cut the lead to one, this time at four singles. Wojcik downed Ellie Mireles 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) and made it a 3-2 match.
But the visitors clinched the first meeting between programs as McGinley got past Knezkova 6-4, 7-5 to seal the win. At number one singles, van Impe was leading Syracuse's Sysoeva 7-6 (7-4) 5-2 when the match was clinched.
