SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse University women's tennis team picked up its third victory over a ranked opponent this season, knocking off No. 60 Georgia Tech 4-1 on Friday afternoon at the Drumlins Tennis Club.
The Orange (7-11, 3-8) claimed an early advantage following a back-and-forth doubles slate. Serafima Shastova and Monika Wojcik struck first at No. 2 doubles, defeating Taly Licht and Sabritt Dozier 6-3. Given Roach and Eleni Karantali picked up a win over Leena Bennetto and Emma Scaldalai to force a winner-take-all match at No. 1 doubles. Nelly Knezkova and Anastasia Sysoeva triumphed in a marathon that lasted an hour and four minutes, securing a 7-6 (7-2) win over Alejandra Cruz and Seri Nayuki.
The Yellow Jackets stung instantly in singles play as No. 66-ranked Cruz defeated Sysoeva. However, Syracuse squashed any hopes of a comeback, starting with Bennetto's 6-1, 6-2 win over Olivia Carneiro. Wojcik then triumphed 6-1, 6-3 over Nayuki to give the Orange a 3-1 advantage. Shastova clinched the win with a tiebreak 7-5, 7-6 (7-3) victory over Licht. Knezkova led in her match against Roach, but the match ultimately went unfinished.
Syracuse returns to Drumlins on Sunday for its final match of the regular season. The Orange face No. 24 Clemson at 11 a.m. on the team's Senior Day.
