SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse University women's tennis team battled but could not overcome No. 33 Stanford, falling 4-2 on Friday afternoon at the Drumlins Tennis Club.
The Orange (5-7, 1-4) pushed Stanford to the brink in doubles, but the Cardinal secured the point. Alyssa Ahn and Tianmei Wang defeated Leena Bennetto and Constance Levivier 6-1 to give Stanford an early advantage. Anastasia Sysoeva and Emma Scaldalai battled back from a 3-5 deficit to square the match against Sein Myoung and Valerie Glozman at 5-5, but Myoung and Glozman ultimately triumphed 7-5 to claim the doubles point. Monika Ekstrand and Caroline Driscoll, the No. 88 ranked doubles pairing in the nation, won 7-5 over Serafima Shastova and Monika Wojcik in the No. 1 doubles match.
Wang picked up a second point for the Cardinal, defeating Bennetto 6-2, 6-1 to open singles action. Syracuse stormed back, picking up two singles points in quick succession. Scaldalai defeated Emma Sun 6-4, 6-1, and Wojcik knocked off Driscoll 7-5, 6-1 to level the contest. The Cardinal answered right back as Myoung defeated Haram Kim 7-5, 6-0 to claim a third point. Ekstrand secured the victory for Stanford, winning 6-4, 7-5 over Sysoeva. Shastova and Ahn were amid the third set when their match was halted.
Syracuse concludes a two-match home stand on Sunday, taking on No. 16 California at 11 a.m. at the Drumlins Tennis Club.
