
Orange Narrowly Edged by UMass

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse University women's tennis team opened a three-match home stand with a narrow defeat, falling to visiting UMass 4-3 Saturday afternoon at Drumlins Country Club.
The Orange (2-3) started the afternoon off strong by claiming the doubles point. Serafima Shastova and Monika Wojcik claimed a 6-2 triumph over Martina Pavissich and Madara Markevica in the number one doubles position. Syracuse's Nelly Knezkova and Constance Levivier secured the doubles point with a 6-3 win over Amelia Tye and Amanda De Oliveira. The Orange pairing of newcomers Emma Scaldalai and Leena Bennetto were narrowly defeated 4-6 by Ella Faessler and Renata Farima.
In singles action, Wojcik quickly dispatched Tye at number two, going 6-2, 6-1 for the first singles point. Haram Kim battled but fell in a three-set-thriller to De Oliveira, losing 3-6, 6-3, 4-6. Knezkova picked up another point for the Orange, defeating Faessler 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 at the number one position. Scaldalai battled until the end but was ultimately defeated in a match tiebreak against Fiona Ao, with the match finishing 6-3, 2-6, 6-7 (8-6) in Ao's favor. Levivier lost in three sets to Markevica 6-7 (3-7), 7-5, 4-6, and in the deciding match, Bennetto was narrowly edged in another match tiebreak by Pavissich, 5-7, 6-7, 6-7 (7-5).
Syracuse returns to Drumlins Country Club on Sunday for an 11 a.m. battle with another Massachusetts foe in Boston University. Sunday's action will be carried on Cuse.tv with live stats on Cuse.com.
