CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The Syracuse University women's tennis team fought but ultimately could not overcome No. 28 Miami, dropping the match 4-0 on Friday afternoon at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
The Orange (6-10, 2-7) battled on every court but came out on the wrong side of doubles. Miami struck first as Raquel Gonzalez and Sebastianna Scilipoti defeated Nelly Knezkova and Anastasia Sysoeva 6-2. Leena Bennetto and Emma Scaldalai, despite playing together for just the second time this season, knocked off Sofia Rocchetti and Maria Vargas 6-4 to force a winner-take-all match at No. 2 doubles. Serafima Shastova and Monika Wojcik survived a match point to force a tiebreak, but Dominika Podhajecka and Daria Volosova triumphed 7-6 (7-2) to secure the doubles point for the Hurricanes.
Jaquelyn Ogunwale logged a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Wojcik to claim a second point for Miami. Volosova secured a third point just seconds after Ogunwale finished, defeating Constance Levivier 6-0, 6-1. Aely Arai claimed the winning point with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Bennetto. Sysoeva defeated Rochetti, who was ranked 96th in the latest ITA singles poll, in a set tiebreak to win the first set, but the match went unfinished.
Syracuse closes out the weekend at Florida State on Sunday. The first doubles serve is slated for 11 a.m. at the Scott Speicher Memorial Tennis Center.
