
Wojcik Picks Up Singles Win at FAU

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Sophomore Monika Wojcik picked up a win at number four singles, but the Syracuse University women's tennis team dropped its first match of the season 6-1 at Florida Atlantic University Friday afternoon.
Syracuse (2-1) battled with three-set matches in three singles matches but the Orange could not surpass the Owls.
Opening with doubles action, the pairing from Florida Atlantic (2-2), Malika Amirgaliyeva and Alexia Patru, won the third flight over Constance Levivier and Leena Bennetto 6-0 before Wojcik and Serafima Shastova were edged 6-3 in number two doubles by Panna Bartha and Katrin Pavkova. In the top flight, Nelly Knezkova and Anastasia Sysoeva were close on the heels of Malwina Rowinska and Lara Smejkal, but the match was unfinished with the Owl pair leading 5-3.
Wojcik won her singles match 4-6, 6-4, 10-1 in the fourth flight over Amirgaliyeva. Knezkova always went the distance with three sets but Rowinska won 4-6, 6-3, 10-3. Sysoeva won the first set of her number two singles matchup but Bartha surged past to win 3-6, 6-1, 10-7.
The Orange continue their Florida trip with a showdown on Sunday at Florida International. Match time is slated for noon in Miami at PayCargo Tennis Center. Sunday will be the season opener for the Panthers.
