No. 10 Syracuse (7-3, 4-2 ACC) extended its winning streak to seven games with a 6-5 conference win over No. 19 Virginia (5-6, 3-3 ACC) at Scott Stadium in Charlottesville, Virginia on Saturday.
The offense was once again led by Molly Guzik, scoring two goals and assisting on another. Mileena Cotter, Annie Parker, Ashlee Volpe and Caroline Trinkaus each added one goal apiece in the victory.
The defense was once again impressive, causing 14 turnovers with Izzy Lahah pacing the team with four and Mackenzie Salentre close behind with three. Lahah also nabbed five ground balls in the triumph. Dan Guyette was impressive in net with four saves. Saturday's win marked the fifth straigh game the Orange held their opponent to six goals or less.
Guzik got the game started with a free position goal just over a minute into the game. The Cavaliers knotted it up a few minutes later before Cotter netted her first goal of the game on an assist from Annie Parker. Virginia responded once more but Parker scored a free position in the final minutes of the first quarter to give the Orange a 3-2 edge.
The second quarter started the same as the first, with a free position goal from Guzik to extend the lead to 4-2. Yet the Cavaliers answered with two goals in just over a two minute stretch to knot things up. Volpe got one back for Syracuse before the half to give Syracuse a 5-4 lead heading into the break.
The second half was a defensive battle, with neither team able to get things going offensively. With just under nine minutes to go in the third quarter, Trinkaus scooped up an errant pass near the defensive restraining line and took it to goal herself for the lone Syracuse goal of the second half.
Virginia did not score in the second half until there were seven minutes remaining, cutting the Syracuse lead down to 6-5. The Orange leaned on its stout defense down the stretch, though, with Guyette and Lahah each causing turnovers in critical moments to maintain the one-goal edge.
The Cavaliers got one final chance after a Syracuse turnover with under a minute to go. With 10 seconds to go, Kaci Benoit forced the game-clinching turnover to give Syracuse the victory.
The Orange will be back in action on Tuesday, March 24 when they take on UAlbany. The game against the Great Danes is set for a 3 p.m. start and will air on ESPN+.
