
#14 Orange Top #4 Northwestern Behind Guzik’s Six Goals

Behind six goals from Molly Guzik and a stout performance from Dan Guyette in net, No. 14 Syracuse (5-3, 3-2 ACC) earned its fifth straight win, downing No. 4 Northwestern (5-2, 0-0 Big Ten), 9-6, at Kyle Fieldhouse in Evanston, Illinois on Thursday night.
Guzik's six goals paced the offense while Caroline Trinkaus, Mackenzie Rich and Bri Peters also found the back of the net. Rich added on with two assists. Guyette notched eight saves on 14 shots on goal for a .571 save percentage.
The Syracuse defense caused 14 turnovers and held the Wildcats scoreless for over 30 minutes, spanning the end of the second quarter until the final minutes of the fourth. Coco Vandiver had four caused turnovers while Izzy Lahah had two.
Northwestern struck first, just over a minute-and-a-half into the game to take the early advantage. Guzik took over from there, scoring three goals in just over three minutes to give Syracuse a 3-1 lead early. Northwestern got one back in the final stages of the first, but Guzik answered quickly in the second quarter with her fourth goal of the game.
Peters got in on the fun, scoring just over a minute after Guzik to extend the lead to 5-2. Northwestern drew closer with two more goals down the stretch to bring the score to 5-4 at the half.
The Syracuse defense took over in the third, holding Northwestern scoreless for the entire period. Guyette had four saves in the half to allow the Orange to pull ahead, 7-4, on goals from Trinkaus and Rich.
Syracuse put its foot on the gas, with Guzik scoring two more goals to give her a career-high six and bring the score to 9-4.Northwestern did not score until there were just under four minutes left in the fourth quarter, bringing their goal drought to over 30 minutes. They'd score once more, but it was too late as the Orange came out away with the 9-6 victory.
The Orange will be back in action on Tuesday, March 17 when they take on the Yale Bulldogs at the JMA Wireless Dome. First draw is set for 4:30 p.m. and will air on ESPNU.
