For the first time in program history, Syracuse University field hockey is the ACC champion. Fourth-seeded Syracuse outlasted sixth-seeded Boston College 1-0 (2-0 SO) Friday afternoon at Karen Shelton Stadium. Sammie Goin and Taylor Bigbie converted in the shootout, and all four Boston College shooters came up empty against Jessie Eiselin.
No. 16 Syracuse (12-6) won three games at the ACC Championship for the first time ever, topping fifth-seeded Louisville and top-seeded North Carolina before Friday's final. The Orange claimed their first conference title since winning the 2011 BIG EAST crown with a 3-2 decision over UConn, and their seventh league championship overall. The win also avenged a double-overtime loss to Boston College in the 1994 BIG EAST championship game, played 32 years ago to the day.
Eiselin (7-5) played all 75 minutes in goal and made two saves as the Orange kept Boston College off the board. Neither team recorded a goal or an assist through regulation and overtime. Goin, a sophomore from Brambleton, Virginia, came through in a shootout for the second time in three days after helping Syracuse past North Carolina on Wednesday. Bigbie, a sophomore from Rocky Point, New York, delivered the second make.
Boston College (10-10) got four saves from Charlotte Kramer in 90 minutes. Kramer also held Bo Madden off the board on the Orange's third shootout attempt, but Laila Rosenquest's miss on the Eagles' fourth try sealed the title for Syracuse.
Bo Madden was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. The senior from Lytham, England, and All-ACC Second Team pick helped anchor a defense that allowed just two shots on goal Friday. Her twin sister, Hattie Madden, joined Aubrey Turner and Eiselin on the All-Tournament Team.
The win was the 49th at Syracuse for fourth-year head coach Lynn Farquhar and the 156th of her career, including 107 at Saint Joseph's. This was Syracuse's first conference championship since 2011 in the BIG EAST and the program's seven league title (1 ACC, 6 BIG EAST).
How it Happened
- Syracuse earned back-to-back penalty corners late in the first quarter. Kramer turned aside a Bigbie shot in the 14th minute to keep the game scoreless.
- Jess Liddell and Jovie Weaver tested Kramer in the second quarter. Liddell's chance came moments after a Syracuse corner, and Weaver's followed in the 24th minute. Kramer stopped both.
- The Orange earned their fourth corner in the 40th minute, but shots from Liddell and Ava Brewer were blocked.
- Boston College mounted its best stretch early in the fourth quarter. Eiselin stopped Lucy Parker in the 48th minute, then denied Rosenquest off the Eagles' first corner a minute later.
- Liddell fired off a Syracuse corner in the 54th minute but was stopped by Kramer. Alexandra De Cain's shot on a Boston College corner was blocked moments later, sending the game to overtime.
- Each team earned a corner in overtime. The Eagles' lone overtime shot, from Madeline Leigh in the 72nd minute, went wide.
- Boston College shot first in the shootout. Madelieve Drion missed before Goin scored. Ike Jakobsen missed and Bigbie answered for a 2-0 lead. De Cain and Bo Madden each missed before Rosenquest's attempt went wide of the mark to clinch the title.
- The ACC title clinches an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament for Syracuse.
- The NCAA First Round is Nov. 13 and the quarterfinals are Nov. 15, both at campus sites. The semifinals (Nov. 20) and national championship (Nov. 22) are in Louisville, Kentucky.
