McCooey Scores on Senior Day

No. 11 Syracuse University field hockey dropped a 3-1 decision to No. 7 Harvard Sunday afternoon at J.S. Coyne Stadium, but the Orange controlled the second half, holding the Crimson scoreless over the final 42 minutes and without a shot in the fourth quarter.
Graduate student Grace Anne McCooey scored for Syracuse (7-4) in the third quarter, her second goal of the season, on an assist from senior Hattie Madden. Senior Jessie Eiselin went the distance in goal, making six saves, while sophomore Chloe Page added a defensive save on the goal line.
Harvard (10-1) built its lead in the opening 18 minutes. Sage Piekarski opened the scoring with Lucy Barker assisting, Emily Bronckers added an unassisted tally and Lara Beekhuis converted a penalty corner set up by Martha le Huray and Rosa Kooijmans. Linde Burger made three saves for the Crimson.
Following the game, Syracuse honored its five seniors and graduate students: McCooey, Eiselin, Hattie Madden, Bo Madden and Grace O'Connor.

How it Happened
- Harvard struck early as Eiselin turned away a Piekarski shot in the first minute, but Piekarski finished on a Barker feed in the third minute for a 1-0 Crimson lead.
- The Crimson earned three straight penalty corners in the 13th minute. Eiselin stopped back-to-back Tilly Butterworth attempts and Page made a defensive save on Beekhuis, but Bronckers found the rebound to make it 2-0 after one quarter.
- Harvard extended the lead in the 18th minute when le Huray inserted a corner and Beekhuis finished. Eiselin denied Beekhuis on another corner a minute later to keep the deficit at three.
- The Orange found their footing in the second quarter, earning three penalty corners in the 25th and 26th minutes. Jess Liddell and Hattie Madden had attempts blocked before Burger stopped a Liddell drive.
- Syracuse got on the board in the 34th minute as Hattie Madden set up McCooey, who finished to cut the lead to 3-1.
- The Orange defense held firm through the rest of the third quarter, forcing Harvard wide on two penalty corner chances. Eiselin made her final save of the day on Bronckers in the 43rd minute.
- Syracuse pushed for a comeback in the fourth quarter, putting four shots toward goal. Burger turned away Ava Brewer in the 47th minute, Liddell had two looks on consecutive corners in the 51st minute and Fieve Frenken forced a save in the 56th minute.
- Even after a yellow card left the Orange a player down in the 58th minute, Syracuse kept Harvard from registering a shot to close out the game.
