From the Start
- One final road trip this regular season is on deck for the Orange as No. 13 Syracuse prepares for a top-15 battle at No. 10 North Carolina on Sunday.
- This week's single game is the first of two nationally televised games on the schedule for the Orange this regular season, preceding the Oct. 25 game against California at J.S. Coyne Stadium.
- Syracuse is coming off a split weekend at home, its first back-to-back home games of the year. The Orange topped No. 16 Louisville 4-2 on Friday, but stumbled on Sunday, dropping a 3-1 decision against then-No. 7 Harvard. It was a slow start for the Orange on Sunday, but Syracuse rallied back to hold the Crimson off the board for the final 42 minutes.
- North Carolina also split last weekend, besting Saint Joseph's 8-0 in Philadelphia before a 2-1 loss at No. 17 Liberty in Lynchburg on Sunday.
- Leah Secondo and Suzanne Bush will have the call on ACC Network this weekend at Karen Shelton Stadium in Chapel Hill.
- Syracuse is looking for its first win over the Tar Heels since 2021 and seeking its first-ever win in Chapel Hill. But recent trends are on the Orange side; earlier this year, Syracuse picked up its first regular season win at Virginia in Charlottesville with a 3-0 win at the end of September.
- It's been goals by committee into the middle of this year. Twelve different players have scored, including a pair with at least five goals (Aubrey Turner 6, Hattie Madden 5). Jovie Weaver, Hattie Madden, Grace Anne McCooey and Sammie Goin, and now Bo Madden each have a game-winning goal to their credit. Madden was credited with the game-winner after converting a penalty stroke against No. 16 Louisville.
- Farquhar is in the middle of her fourth season at the helm of the program, looking to add to her 44 wins in her time at Syracuse. The Orange reached the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals for a second time in those first three years last year, knocking out Liberty in strokes.
With a Win Sunday Syracuse Would...
- Improve to 6-3 away from J.S. Coyne this season.
- Bump Syracuse's record away from home to 27-17 under head coach Lynn Farquhar (since 2023).
- Notch the 12th win in the month of October under Farquhar's watch, including improving to 11-5 in the 10th month since 2024.
- Jump Syracuse's conference record to 3-2 on the season.
- Snap a seven-game slide to the Tar Heels dating back to Oct. 1, 2021.
- Be Syracuse's first-ever win over North Carolina in Chapel Hill.
- See the Orange win on a Sunday for the first time since besting Bucknell 10-0 on Sept. 13.
- Be the 45th win in Lynn Farquhar's head coaching career at Syracuse and her 152nd overall win as a head coach, including 107 at Saint Joseph's.
Strike Fast, Strike Late
- Coming out of the gates and doing just fine seems to be a theme for the Orange this season.
- Eleven times this season Syracuse has scored in the first five minutes of a quarter, including three times last weekend with a pair against No. 16 Louisville and once against Harvard.Â
- Against the Cardinals, Aubrey Turner potted the first Syracuse goal for a 1-0 lead before Bo Madden converted a penalty stroke to break a 1-1 tie just 97 seconds into the second half.
- On Sunday against the Crimson, overcoming a slow start, Syracuse got a Grace Anne McCooey goal in the 34th minute to cut the Crimson lead down to two.
- Arguably, scoring late and sealing periods is more important and the Orange have done the 13 times this season.
- Last weekend against Louisville, Jess Liddell struck with 15 seconds left on a penalty corner before Jovie Weaver iced the game with an empty net goal with 2 minutes and 21 seconds left.
- While the Orange have surrendered nine goals in the first five minutes of a quarter, Syracuse has allowed just six goals in the final five minutes of a quarter this year. Wake Forest is the only team to do so twice in the same game.
