WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – No. 11 Syracuse University field hockey answered twice but could not complete the comeback, falling 4-2 to No. 3 Wake Forest Sunday afternoon at Kentner Stadium.

Syracuse (6-2, 1-1 ACC) got goals from Aubrey Turner and Jess Liddell, each coming in response to a Wake Forest tally. Elisa Carvajal assisted on Turner's second-quarter penalty corner goal, while Grace Anne McCooey and Ava Brewer both picked up assists on Liddell's third-quarter strike. Jessie Eiselin played all 60 minutes in goal for the Orange, making five saves, all in the second half.

Wake Forest (6-3, 1-1 ACC) was led by Bianca Rees-Gibbs, who scored twice in the first quarter. Ava Moore and Sarah Mudd added goals for the Demon Deacons. Mia Montag had two assists, while Faye Janse and Mia Schoenbeck added one apiece. Ruby Butterfield went the distance in net for Wake Forest, making two saves.

How it Happened

Wake Forest struck first just 2:36 into the game as Rees-Gibbs found the back of the net for her ninth goal of the season.
Turner registered Syracuse's first shot on goal in the eighth minute, but Butterfield turned it aside.
The Demon Deacons doubled their lead in the 12th minute. After the Orange blocked a Schoenbeck shot on a penalty corner, Wake earned a second straight corner and Rees-Gibbs converted, with assists from Janse and Montag, for a 2-0 lead after one quarter.
The Orange defense kept Wake off the board in the second quarter, blocking a Sela Provenzano shot in the 25th minute and forcing a wide Schoenbeck attempt on a corner in the 27th.
Syracuse earned its first penalty corners of the day in the 28th minute. Butterfield stopped Carvajal on the first, but on the second Carvajal set up Turner, who cut the deficit to 2-1 with 2:17 left in the half.
Wake came out of the break with five penalty corners in the opening three minutes of the third quarter. The Orange blocked three shots and Eiselin stopped an Amelia Blood attempt to keep it a one-goal game.
Eiselin denied Rees-Gibbs again in the 41st minute. Wake broke through in the 44th as Moore scored on a corner, assisted by Montag and Schoenbeck, for a 3-1 lead.
The Orange answered just 74 seconds later. Liddell scored off feeds from McCooey and Brewer to pull Syracuse within 3-2 heading into the fourth quarter.
Eiselin made saves on Schoenbeck in the 47th minute and Provenzano in the 54th. Mudd then scored her third goal of the year 25 seconds after the Provenzano save to make it 4-2.
Eiselin closed her afternoon with a save on Rees-Gibbs with 1:29 remaining.

Wake Forest outshot Syracuse 19-5 and held a 10-2 edge in penalty corners.
Syracuse put four of its five shots on goal and converted one of its two penalty corners.
Wake registered 13 of its 19 shots in the second half, when Eiselin made all five of her saves.
