Farquhar Picks Up 150th Career Win

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – A pair of Virginia natives came home and delivered as No. 11 Syracuse University field hockey opened ACC play with a 3-0 shutout of No. 9 Virginia Friday afternoon at Turf Field, handing Head Coach Lynn Farquhar the 150th win of her head coaching career.

Syracuse (6-1, 1-0 ACC) got goals from Sammie Goin, Aubrey Turner and Karsin Beatty. Goin, a sophomore from Brambleton, Virginia, opened the scoring in the seventh minute, while Beatty, a sophomore from Richmond, Virginia, sealed it in the 55th minute. Turner led the Orange with two points on a goal and an assist, and Jess Liddell added an assist. Jessie Eiselin played all 60 minutes in goal, making six saves to earn the shutout.

Virginia (5-3, 1-2 ACC) outshot Syracuse 14-6 and held an 8-3 edge in penalty corners, but the Orange put all six of their shots on goal. Nilou Lempers made three saves in 54:05 of work before Virginia pulled its goalkeeper for the final six minutes.

The victory was the first for Syracuse in Charlottesville since the 2015 season and its first regular season win on the Grounds. It also snapped a two-game skid against the Cavaliers and marked the first time the Orange won an ACC opener on the road since a 3-1 win at No. 3 Boston College in 2021. In a series where 16 of the previous 21 meetings were decided by one goal, the 3-0 result matched the largest margin of victory for Syracuse against Virginia.

How it Happened

Eiselin was tested early, turning aside a Caitlin Connell shot less than three minutes in.
Virginia's Mary Adams was shown a green card in the sixth minute, and the Orange made the Cavaliers pay. Syracuse earned its first penalty corner moments later, and Goin ripped a hard shot from the top of the circle off a Turner feed for a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute.
The Cavaliers pushed in the second quarter with three shots in a seven-minute stretch, but Eiselin saved a Connell attempt and the Syracuse defense blocked a Riley Savage effort.
Turner doubled the lead in the 27th minute, jumping a Virginia pass right in front of the cage and finishing unassisted for her fourth goal of the season. Virginia's first corner of the game followed in the 29th minute, but Lauren Sloan's shot went wide, and Syracuse carried a 2-0 lead into halftime.
Eiselin stopped Livvy Barker early in the third quarter before Lempers denied Liddell on a Syracuse corner in the 33rd minute. The Orange defense blocked shots from Connell and Mia Abello on back-to-back Virginia corners, and Eiselin closed the period with another save on Connell.
Lempers kept the Cavaliers within reach in the fourth, stopping Turner and Taylor Bigbie in the span of a few minutes.
With six minutes to play, the Orange converted their third and final corner of the game as Beatty deflected a Liddell shot into the cage for a 3-0 advantage in the 55th minute.
Virginia played the rest of the game without a goalkeeper and earned three corners in the final 30 seconds, but Eiselin stopped Connell and the Orange defense blocked shots from Abello and Connell to preserve the shutout.

Behind the Numbers

Syracuse converted two of its three penalty corners, while Virginia went scoreless on eight.
The Orange were a perfect 6-for-6 in putting shots on goal.
Farquhar's 43rd win at Syracuse was the 150th of her head coaching career, including 107 at Saint Joseph's.
The all-time series now stands at 17-5 in favor of Virginia.
