SYRACUSE, N.Y. – No. 6 Syracuse scored the first six goals of the game and never looked back in a 21-9 victory against UAlbany on Friday in the JMA Wireless Dome. It marked the season opener for both teams.
Â
Senior Olivia Adamson and grad student Emma Ward led a balanced offense that featured 11 different goal scorers. The pair, along with junior Emma Muchnick and freshman Mileena Cotter, scored three goals apiece. Adamson also dished out three assists for a team-high six points.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
While the veterans led the way, it was the newcomers who gave Syracuse the early lead. Freshman Alexa Vogelman started the scoring 36 seconds into the action with a free-position goal and then assisted on grad transfer Sam DeVito's first goal in orange. Freshman Caroline Trinkaus found the back of the net and the Orange were off and running. 'Cuse led 8-1 before UAlbany tallied three straight to cut the deficit to four, 8-4.
Â
Junior Gracie Britton halted the Great Danes' scoring run with her first goal of the season at the 11:44 mark of the second quarter. It was the first of 10-straight for Syracuse as it held UAlbany without a goal for more than 21 minutes of action. Back-to-back goals by sophomore Joely Caramelli and senior Payton Rowley gave the Orange their largest lead of the day at 20-5 with 14:49 to play.
Â
OF NOTE
Goalkeeper Daniella Guyette made her first career start and recorded three saves and three ground balls. Meghan Rode also made her first start in the draw circle and had a career-high 11 draw controls. Defensively, Kaci Benoit caused three turnovers and picked up two ground balls.
Â
The win was the 50th career win for Orange head coach Kayla Treanor. Treanor, who is in her fourth year at the helm of the 'Cuse program, has guided her alma mater to two ACC regular-season titles, three NCAA Tournament appearances and two trips to the national semifinals.
