
FIeld Hockey Falls at No. 2 UNC

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Syracuse University field hockey opened conference play Friday evening, but dropped its ACC opener 5-0 at defending national champion and second-ranked UNC at Karen Shelton Stadium.
Syracuse (4-2, 0-1 ACC) earned three corners, but could not manage to find the back of the net. Netminder Louise Pert played all 60 minutes for the Orange, making four saves. Vivian Rowan and Bo van Kempen combined for four of the six Orange shots.
North Carolina (5-0, 1-0 ACC) had a five-point night from Ryleigh Heck, who scored a goal with three assists. Sanne Hak and Lisa Slinkert added assists while four other Tar Heels scored goals. Abigail Taylor made four saves for UNC.
How it Happened

How it Happened
- The host Tar Heels, playing at home for the first time this season, drew a corner in the first minute but Pert was quick to make the save. Midway through the first period, Avery Donohue scored for UNC on a broken play for a 1-0 lead that held through the quarter.
- Rowan got off one shot for the Orange late in the period but was stopped by Taylor.
- North Carolina scored 53 seconds into the second quarter on a Pleun Lammers deflection goal. That lead held through the remainder of the half.
- Again UNC struck quickly in the third quarter, taking a 3-0 lead in the 32nd minute on a goal from Jasmina Smolenaars on a Heck assist.
- Carolina added to its lead late in the quarter on Heck's tally with Smolenaars on the backend.
- After a series of three straight UNC corner attempts, all blocked down by Orange defenders, Molly Catchpole scored the final goal of the evening in the 54th minute.
- The Orange head to Farmville, Virginia on Sunday for an 11:30 a.m. match at Longwood University.
- The nonconference showdown will air on ESPN+ and is the second of four straight games on the road for Syracuse.
