PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Syracuse University field hockey got an early strike from Taylor Bigbie's that held up for 50 minutes of game play, but No. 20 Rutgers scored late to force overtime, then took the edge in a shootout to hand the Orange their first loss of the season at the ACC/Big Ten Challenge Sunday afternoon at the Bauer Track and Field Hockey Complex.
Syracuse (3-1) had its three-game winning streak to open the season snapped, while Rutgers (2-2) earned the win after the teams played to a 1-1 deadlock through 60 minutes of regulation and 15 minutes of overtime.
Jessie Eiselin turned in a full match in goal for the Orange, making eight saves on nine shots on goal across 75 minutes of work. Bigbie's unassisted goal in the first minutes stood as the only tally Syracuse would get for the afternoon.
Rutgers got its equalizer from Olivia Fraticelli, unassisted, in the 55th minute, her fifth goal of the season. Emily Nicholls went the distance for the Scarlet Knights, stopping six of seven shots on goal in 75 minutes to pick up the win. Rutgers also had a goal from Madelyn Kidd off a penalty corner in the 34th minute overturned on video review, keeping the score at 1-0 Syracuse at the time.
How it Happened

Bigbie opened the scoring just 2:55 into the game, finishing unassisted with a reverse chip off the far post for a quick 1-0 Orange lead.
Eiselin and the Syracuse defense weathered a heavy second-half push from Rutgers, which fired 11 penalty corners on the day compared to just two for the Orange.
A Rutgers goal off a Kidd penalty corner in the 34th minute was overturned following an official review, preserving Syracuse's 1-0 edge.
Rutgers broke through in the 55th minute, as Fraticelli slotted home an unassisted goal to tie the score at 1-1.
Neither team could find the go-ahead goal in a scoreless overtime period, sending the game to a shootout.
Rutgers converted four of its four shootout attempts from Anna Cogdell, Talia Schenck, Fraticelli and Martha Goodridge, while Syracuse got a make from Bo Madden but missed with Bigbie and Ally Snyder, giving the Scarlet Knights the 4-1 shootout tally.

By the Numbers

Rutgers held a decisive 20-12 edge in shots and an 11-2 advantage in penalty corners, but Eiselin's eight saves kept the Orange in front for most of regulation.
Eiselin (8 saves) and Nicholls (6 saves) both played every minute of regulation and overtime in net for their respective teams.
Five cards were shown in the contest: green cards to Syracuse's Belle van de Pas (35:35), Rutgers' Emma Uprichard (42:35) and Rutgers' Frederique Vernooij (52:03), a yellow card to Rutgers' Anna Cogdell (48:10) and a yellow card to Syracuse's Bigbie (59:08).
Sunday's result was Syracuse's first defeat of the season after a 3-0 start and the first time this season the Orange played under the new Division I overtime rules, keeping 11 players on the field instead of 7-on-7 as previously used.
