From the Start
- The final game of a three-game road swing - the second-longest this season - is on tap for Friday afternoon in Durham as No. 9 Syracuse takes on third-ranked Duke at Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium.Â
- Game time is slated for 3 p.m. on ACC Network Extra.
- Syracuse sits at 1-1 in the ACC after splitting last weekend's results, shutting out No. 9 Virginia 3-0 in Charlottesville before dropping a 4-2 decision on Sunday at No. 3 Wake Forest.Â
- The Orange and Blue Devils battle for the 19th time on Friday, the lone game of the week for Syracuse. Duke enters the weekend with a 7-2 overall record and paces the ACC at 3-0 this season.
- This weekend is the second of three trips Syracuse will make to the state of North Carolina. The Orange played in Winston-Salem last weekend and will return for an Oct. 18 to face the Tar Heels in Chapel Hill. UNC will also host the 2026 ACC Field Hockey Tournament at Karen Shelton Stadium from Nov. 3 until the title game on Nov. 6.
- Since the league expanded in 2024 to incorporate California and Stanford, Syracuse and Virginia are the only two teams in the ACC that are playing at all three Carolina schools in the same season for a second time. The two West Coast Schools played at all three last season.
- Unstoppable force meets immovable object this weekend:Â
- It's been goals by committee in the early goings this year. Eleven different players have scored, including a pair with fiveo goals (Hattie Madden, Aubrey Turner). Jovie Weaver, Hattie Madden, Grace Anne McCooey and now Sammie Goin each have a game-winning goal to their credit.
- Farquhar is in the early stages of her fourth season at the helm of the program, looking to add to her 43 wins in her time at Syracuse. The Orange reached the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals for a second time in those first three years last year, knocking out Liberty in strokes.
With a Win Friday Syracuse Would...
- Improve to 6-2 in games away from Coyne this year, including what would be a 5-1 mark in true road games.
- Mark a second-straight win against the Blue Devils, the first back-to-back Orange wins since ripping off seven straight between 2019 and 2022.
- See the Orange win their first game in Durham against the Blue Devils since Oct. 16, 2021, a 7-2 final.
- Go to 2-1 in the first three ACC games of the season for the first time since 2022. It would be the fifth time since joining the ACC that Syracuse gets to at least 2-1 in the first three league games (2013, 2015, 2016, 2022).
- Be the 44th win in Lynn Farquhar's head coaching career at Syracuse and her 151st overall win as a head coach, including 107 at Saint Joseph's.
Brick Wall Corner Unit
- It's not a ratio a lot of coaches would enjoy seeing; Syracuse has taken just 39 attacking penalty corners this year, the second-fewest in the ACC, but surrendered the most opponent penalty corners (64) in the conference.
- But it turns out the Orange REALLY like stopping opposing APC units. Syracuse has allowed just three penalty corner goals all season, surrendering one against Ohio State and two last weekend at No. 3 Wake Forest.Â
- The Orange have six games under their belts without allowing a penalty corner goal, including a four-game stretch (Rutgers, Bucknell, UMass Lowell, Virginia).Â
- The Orange DPC unit thwarts opponents at better than 95 percent this season. Last season, opponents capitalized on 17.2 percent of their chances.
- All of last season, Syracuse had eight games without allowing a penalty corner goal.
- On the reverse, Syracuse's attacking penalty corner unit struggled early, scoring three times in the first five games of the season. Since beginning practice back at J.S. Coyne Stadium on September 15, and not having to travel to Ithaca to practice, the Orange have racked six goals on the APC on 11 opportunities (.545). In the first five games, the Orange struck on just 10 percent of its corner chances.
