From the Start
- After a long one-game home stand, the Orange are back on the road as No. 11 Syracuse heads south to open ACC play this weekend.
- Syracuse takes on No. 9 Virginia to being league play, kicking off at Turf Field with a 4 p.m. start on ACC Network Extra.
- The Orange travel further south on Sunday for a noon start at No. 3 Wake Forest. These two teams are the last two ACC teams the Orange played, meeting both in the league's Quarterfinals (Wake) and Semifinals (Virginia) last fall in Louisville.
- This is a second year in a row the Orange take on these two foes to open league play after hosting both at J.S. Coyne Stadium a year ago.
- Syracuse is coming off a special game last Friday against UMass Lowell, playing on a brand-new surface at J.S. Coyne Stadium. The Cardiac 'Cuse was on full display last week as the Orange knocked off the River Hawks 3-2 (3-2 SO) to pick up a win on the new AstroTurf for a second time. The Orange previously beat Boston College in the first game on the previous surface after it was installed in 2016.
- This weekend may be a clash of styles as the high-speed Orange, who average 3.50 goals per game and ranked 10th nationally, face two teams near the top-20 in goals against average: Virginia is 21st with a 1.27 GAA while Wake Forest is 13th nationally with a 0.98 GAA.
- It's been goals by committee in the early goings this year. Nine different players have scored, including four with a trio of goals (Taylor Bigbie, Hattie Madden, Aubrey Turner, and Jovie Weaver). Weaver, Hattie Madden, and Grace Anne McCooey each have a game-winning goal to their credit.
- Farquhar is in the early stages of her fourth season at the helm of the program, looking to add to her 42 wins in her time at Syracuse. The Orange reached the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals for a second time in those first three years last year, knocking out Liberty in strokes.
With a Win Friday Syracuse Would...
- Improve to 5-1 in games away from Coyne this year, including what would be a 4-1 mark in true road games.
- Snap a two-game slide against the Cavaliers, dating back to a 1-0 win over Virginia during the 2024 ACC Tournament in Winston-Salem.
- Collect its first win in Charlottesville since the 2015 campaign and would mark the first regular season victory for the Orange on the Grounds of UVa.
- Win an ACC opener when league play is on the road for the first time since a 3-1 win at #3 Boston College to begin conference play in 2021.
- Be the 43rd win in Lynn Farquhar's head coaching career at Syracuse and her 150th overall win as a head coach, including 107 at Saint Joseph's.
As Close as It Gets
- Syracuse and Virginia will battle for the 22nd time on the field hockey field since their first meeting in 1993.
- The Cavaliers lead the series 17-4-0, but that doesn't mean the games haven't been close.
- Sixteen of the previous 21 meetings have been decided by one goal, including two shootouts in the last two seasons.Â
- Seven times the winner has needed overtime or a shootout to clinch the victory, including the very first meeting on Sept. 18, 1993, a 2-1 Virginia win.
- Sunday will be the 20th all-time meeting between Syracuse and Wake Forest. The Orange hold a one-game lead over the Demon Deacons at 10-9, including a 3-1 win in the ACC Tournament last year in Louisville.
- Nine of the previous clashes have been one-goal affairs, including six of the last eight games. Last year's 3-1 win for the Orange snapped a run of three-straight one goal decisions for the winners.
