How it Happened
- The Orange press wasted little time getting going, grabbing possession early as van Kempen made a rare trip into the offensive zone on a shot saved by Wake netminder Ellie Todd just 90 seconds in.
- Ten minutes later, van Kempen got a second shot on goal during a penalty corner in the 11th minute but was turned aside by Todd again.
- In the 24th and 25 minutes, Wake got back-to-back penalty corners sent in by Montag, but Eiselin made two saves in succession. As time expired in the first half, Wake got the final corner of the second quarter but Eiselin shut the door on Storey to end the half scoreless.
- The Demon Deacons had two early shots in the 35th minute but both efforts were blocked, including one by Syracuse flyer Bo Madden on a penalty corner.
- In the 41st minute, Strunk sent in a corner to trapper Hamilton, setting up van Kempen's 15th goal of the year and putting the Orange up 1-0.
- Wake Forest equalized the score in the 46th minute on Montag's corner insert, which was stopped by Storey and scored by Schoenbeck.
- Wake got off two more quick shots in the 46th and 47th minute, but the first was blocked and the second stopped by King.
- The Orange offense did not get a chance in overtime as Wake pressured Syracuse into its own zone. Back-to-back penalty corners for the visitors led to the game-winning goal, which was reviewed by the officials to confirm.
- No. 4 Syracuse hosts No. 3 Virginia at J.S. Coyne Stadium on Sunday for a noon start in the top-five showdown.
- Sunday's heavyweight bout, which will air on ACC Network Extra, marks the first top-five game for Syracuse since October 2016.
